9 Fundamentals for making your speaking test an effective interactive session

In IELTS Speaking test you can score get good scores if you are good in making your session interesting and interactive. So today in this article we will discuss 9 Fundamentals for making your speaking test an effective interactive session.

1. Make your introduction section impactful- although, it is clear that initial discussion with the speaking examiner is not evaluated, it’s like a golden opportunity to leave a strong imprint on the examiner’s mind. First of all, examiner gives a brief introduction about himself and then ask you something related to your name, hometown etc. You are supposed to answer them as per your situation.

Here, while entering the exam room, greeting the examiner with a polite smile as per timings is needed. Also, you need to answer your name and other personal questions as per details on the passport. Apart from this, make sure you are not providing any extra information than asked just be precise. Here, telling the name along with state is enough.

2. Keep in mind that the speaking exam is conducted to assess your proficiency in conversating in English language. You don’t need to very formal, just being confident and comfortable with language is needed. Be very careful while the examiner is speaking and respond accordingly.

3. IELTS exam checks your language ability and not your knowledge. You should be aware of way to respond more than a variety of topics. Speaking at length will enable you to attain higher band score even though facts are missing.  However, you will lose your score if you will just give one to two lines answer.

4. Try to associate your answers with your personal experience as with this, you will be able to elaborate your answer as per requirement.

5. Avoid time wastage for thinking about unfamiliar topics as if you feel unclear about any topic, be honest and reply accordingly. You can revolve your answer around the topic, for instance, if you are asked something about your pet and you don’t own any, then simply say, ” i don’t know much about keeping pets as I don’t have any but one of my friends own a dog and i love playing with it.”

6. Stick to the question’s demand- being coherent while speaking is really important so make sure you don’t lose focus from your main question, though you need to give ideas to explain it.

7. Be honest to avoid fuss- Although there’s no band deduction for telling a lie, but being on safer side is important as if you will lie and in next questions, you find it difficult to respond, it will put a wrong impression on the examiner. Eventually, you might end up losing your score.

8. Improve your grammar – Having a strong hold on grammar is essential but above all matters following points-

Use right tense as per need

Answer majorly in present situation

Avoid continuous tense usage unnecessarily

Focus on pronunciation. You should pronounce words clearly and should use standardized pronunciations i.e. British or American pronunciation. To improve this, you can listen to audios of these regions as many as possible. Avoid fake accents as you should be natural. So avoid imitating others. Just be clear while speaking.

9. Be confident – Don’t be scared of this test. Just be normal and don’t panic. Take it as an interaction to present your ideas and opinions. Don’t be conscious and stay calm.
