Listening Vocabulary
Studying at college/university:
Library – a building, room, or organization that has a collection of books, documents, music, and sometimes things such as tools or artwork, for people to borrow, usually without payment.
Sentence – The professor donated his books to the library.
Department – a part of an organization such as a school, business, or government that deals with a particular area of study or work.
Sentence – Our company has decided to computerize its wages department.
Computer Centre – an establishment primarily engaged in providing electronic data processing and information storage.
Sentence – The school has plans to build a computer centre.
Classroom – a room in a school or college where groups of students are taught.
Sentence – The children put up posters on the classroom walls.
Attendance – the fact of going somewhere such as a church, school, etc. regularly.
Sentence – Attendance at the concert was very poor.
Deadline – a time or day by which something must be done.
Sentence – We just managed to make the deadline.
Speech – the ability to talk, the activity of talking, or a piece of spoken language.
Sentence – The conference delegates were transfixed by her speech.
Lecture – a formal talk on a serious subject given to a group of people, especially students.
Sentence – He gave the child a lecture on the importance of punctuality.
Tutor – a teacher who teaches a child outside of school, especially in order to give the child extra help with a subject he or she finds difficult.
Sentence – He was my personal tutor at university.
Main Hall – The hall in a house or flat is the area just inside the front door, into which some of the other rooms open.
Sentence – The main hall of the palace is built over a large undercroft and has twin naves with columns supporting a timber roof.
Computer Laboratory – a space which provides computer services to a defined community.
Sentence – This paper describes the design and implementation method of remote power supply control system for computer laboratory.
Certificate – an official document that states that the information on it is true.
Sentence – I’m studying for the First Certificate in English.
Diploma – a document given by a college or university to show that you have passed a particular exam or finished your studies.
Sentence – She won her diploma in only three years.
Placement Test – a test that measures someone’s ability in order to put that person in a particular class or group.
Sentence – He scored well in the placement test and was put in the most advanced class.
Facilities – a place, especially including buildings, where a particular activity happens.
Sentence – I can dive under the water without any facilities but I can’t stop down there too much time.
College – a university where you can study for an undergraduate (= first) degree.
Sentence – I couldn’t transfer all my credits from junior college.
Dining Room – a room in which meals are eaten.
Sentence – The dining room looks out onto a pretty garden.
Specialist – someone who has a lot of experience, knowledge, or skill in a particular subject.
Sentence – A specialist in ergonomics will work with the team designing the production line in our new factory.
Knowledge – understanding of or information about a subject that you get by experience or study, either known by one person or by people generally.
Sentence – You’re the local knowledge, not me.
International – involving more than one country.
Sentence – The Red Cross is an international charity.
