Listening Vocabulary
Studying at college/university:
Course Outline – approved document that outlines what students are expected to learn in a course and what they can expect in the way of instructional methods, activities, assignments and grading methods.
Sentence – Earlier, we mentioned needing someplace to start, well Teach Yourself Graphic Design: A Self-Study Course Outline is one of those places.
Group Discussion – a type of discussion that involves people sharing ideas or activities.
Sentence – Group discussion is also immensely helpful in convincing patients that they can choose a course that feels right to them.
Handout – a piece of printed information provided free of charge, especially to accompany a lecture or advertise something.
Sentence – There’s a four-page handout that you can pick up as you leave.
Research – a detailed study of a subject, especially in order to discover (new) information or reach a (new) understanding.
Sentence – He lost interest in much of his research.
Proofreading – the process of finding and correcting mistakes in text before it is printed or put online.
Sentence – Correction and improvement, page setup and proofreading, or rejection of the manuscript are all practical activities that constitute the third level of editing.
Experiment – a test done in order to learn something or to discover if something works or is true.
Sentence – The results of this experiment do not correlate with the results of earlier ones.
Written Work – A written test or piece of work is one which involves writing rather than doing something practical or giving spoken answers.
Sentence – Planning and producing written work, quoting sources, checking: these too are often daunting tasks for the student.
Report Writing – A report is a written account of something that one has observed, heard, done, or investigated.
Sentence – Report writing involves finding information, analyzing it and presenting it – each an improvable skill.
Experience – practical contact with and observation of facts or events.
Sentence – Experience is the fruit of the tree of errors.
Reference – a writer or a book, article, etc. that is mentioned in a piece of writing, showing you where particular information was found.
Sentence – I keep my reference books near my desk for convenience.
Textbook – a book that contains detailed information about a subject for people who are studying that subject.
Sentence – This is the standard textbook on the subject.
Student Advisor – a person who advises students or others on personal problems or academic and occupational choice.
Sentence – You may go to the Student Placement Office or ask Dr. Thomason, the Foreign Student Advisor in the Administrative Building.
Teamwork – the activity of working together in a group with other people, especially when this is successful.
Sentence – Good teamwork is a powerful tool for effective management.
Module – one of a set of separate parts that, when combined, form a complete whole.
Sentence – There are no special entry requirements for the module.
Topic – a subject that is discussed, written about, or studied.
Sentence – The topic arose naturally in the conversation.
Dictionary – a book that contains a list of words in alphabetical order and explains their meanings, or gives a word for them in another language; an electronic product giving similar information on a computer, smartphone, etc.
Sentence – The dictionary is reprinting with minor corrections.
Laptop – a computer that is small enough to be carried around easily and is flat when closed.
Sentence – Video transmitted from the ground will be displayed on laptop computers aboard the shuttle.
Printer – a machine that is connected to a computer and prints onto paper using ink.
Sentence – The printer has several advantages over conventional printers.
