Line charts Vocabulary – IELTS Writing
In IELTS writing test, candidates need to assess four things:
- Task achievement
- Coherence and cohesion
- Lexical resources
- Grammatical range and accuracy
Structure
The structure to write task 1 is very simple which contains paragraphs. Candidates use different structure if they like, but this one has been proven to be successful and approved by IELTS examiners.
Paragraph1 (introduction)
Sentence 1: paraphrase question
Paragraph 2 (overview)
Sentence1: overview of first main feature
Sentence 2: overview of second main feature
Sentence 3 makes general comparison, if appropriate
Paragraph: 3 (details of significant feature 1)
Sentence 1- supporting details

Sentence 3- supporting details/ comparison details if appropriate.
Paragraph 4- details of significant feature 2
Sentence 1 – supporting details

Possible verbs: upward trend

There are two main grammatical structures candidates can use to describe trends.
- There + be+ adjective + noun+ in + noun phrases
Example:
(a) there is/was a gradual rise in the price of oil
(b) There has /had been a sharp drop in the price of oil.
Possible adjectives:

- Modest
- Sharp
- Dramatic
- Slight
- Steep
- Steady
- Significant
- Considerable
- Rapid
2. Noun phrase+ verb+ adverb
Example: in past tense
- The price of oil rose gradually
- The price of oil has been risen dramatically
Possible adverbs:
- Gradually

- Considerably
- Rapidly
- Slowly

Describing increases and decreases When describing any of the charts in IELTS writing task 1, candidates might have to describe increases and decreases. |
There are three main ways to describe increases and decreases.
1. Noun phrase+ verb+ adverb
Example: in past tense
- The price of property fell sharply
- The percentage of homes dropped dramatically.
2. There+ be+ noun+ in+ noun phrase.
Example
- There had been an increase in the cost of coffee.
- There was fall in literacy levels.
3. Using fractions
Example
- The price of oil halved in less than a year.
- The price of oil has halved since July.
- By July, the price of oil has halved
Making comparisons:
IELTS writing academic task 1 often requires candidates to make comparisons between data sources, groups and times.
Here are five grammatical structures to make comparisons.
- More/few/less+ first noun+ than+ second noun
Example: overall, more people preferred public transport than taxies.
2. Of one syllable (-er) + than + second noun
Example: a higher number of people preferred public transport than taxies.
3. More/less + adj of more than one syllable+ than + second noun
Example: taxies were more popular than public transport
4. Of one syllable (est.)
Example: the highest % of commuters preferred taxies.
5. The most/ least + adj of more than one syllable
Example: the least popular mode of transport was buses.
Time Phrases:
- Over the next three days.
- Three days later
- In the following three days
- The next three days show
- Over the period
- From….. To……
- Between…….. And……..
- The last year
- The first year
- The final year
- At the beginning of the period
- At the end of the period.
