IELTS General Training Writing Task 1 Letter Writing Tips

In General training part of IELTS the task 1 of writing is a letter and one have to be very careful while writing this piece of test if you want to get good scores. So, today in this article we will discuss some IELTS General Training Writing Task 1 Letter Writing Tips which will help you to achieve your target score easily.

1 Read and follow the Instructions

You should carefully read the instructions as this will show you the path and guide you about the purpose of the letter, content and the recipient.  So, you should write the letter according to the given instructions.

2 Identify the letter type and its purpose

You should read the statement to identify its question type as there are three types of letters.  

Three types of letters are:-

3.  Make a Plan

You should plan your writing before starting as if you don’t plan properly you will not be able to fulfill the demand of the question. Moreover, always remember to follow the basic IELTS letter writing structure:

  • Explain the problem
  • Describe why it disturbs you
  • Suggest a solution

4 Use the Right writing Style

You should always adopt your writing style according to the letter type i.e. formal, informal or semi-formal. You should always mould your style formal or informal according to the question type.

5 Proper Opening and Closing

Opening and closing statements are very crucial if you want to get good scores in IELTS. Opening should be according to the reason of the letter and same is for the closing. Here is the appropriate opening and closing of different letter types.

6 Understand and use the standard written phrases

In the letter writing, we use several standard phrases and expressions. They not only same your precious time and effort, but also helps the reader to understand the meaning.

  • I look forward to meeting you…
  • I am writing to express my annoyance with…
  • I was really sorry to hear that…
  • I was delighted to learn that…
  • I am sorry to tell you that…

  • Perhaps it would be possible to…

7 Break your letter

Dividing the letter into paragraphs is one of the best tips that help you score high. Usually, you need four paragraphs.

  • Introduction
  • Problem / Situation
  • Solution / Action
  • Conclusion
