IMPORTANT TYPES OF IELTS READING
IELTS Candidates can find various question types in IELTS Reading. In this article we will help you to get familiar with the important one’s that are often found in the examination. In IELTS reading you will get 3 passages which contains 40 questions. The questions of the reading module are presented to students in different forms.
1. Matching Heading Questions
In this students need to choose a heading from the list given which relates to the particular paragraph.
SKILLS :
1.You need to opt the skill which helps you to understand the difference between main idea and supporting points.
2. Understanding aims of paragraphs.
3. Do acknowledge general content.
GUIDELINES :
1.Read out questions before you move to passage.
2. Analyse the various headings as they are more in number. So, focus while matching them.

2. TRUE FALSE NOTE GIVEN/ YES NO NOT GIVEN QUESTIONS
This is a particular type in which you need to find the writer’s information or opinions is mentioned there in the passage or not.
SKILLS :
Examine particular information in the paragraph. Scanning and Understanding (T/F/NG questions)
Understanding opinion of the writer (Y/N/NG).
GUIDELINES :
Focus on the meaning of each answer.
If YES/TRUE it means same data in the passage is given.
If NO/FALSE it means the information is contradicted.
If NOT GIVEN it means information is not available in the given text.
3. Summary Completion
This is type in which students have to fill the gaps given by using words of the passage or given as a hint in the box.
SKILLS :
1.You must know skimming and scanning fir this in order to find specific information.
2. Reading properly and getting aware of supporting ideas and points. Focus on selecting appropriate words too.
GUIDELINES :
1.Follow this step, find the type of word needed for each blank (noun, verb, adjective etc.) target words in the passage.
2. Check how many words are required to fill in each answer. Answers usually follow the order in summary but they must be grammatically correct.
4. MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTIONS
In this you need to select one option among 3 or 4 given in the questions.
SKILLS :
To solve this scanning is important and understanding is very essential of the particular text.
GUIDELINES :
Learn to paraphrase information in the questions and options so as to locate precise information.
2. Answers usually come in order. Answers are usually letters (A, B, C or D) – read the questions carefully to check.

5. SELECTION OF TITLE
In this you need to choose appropriate title for the particular paragraph.
SKILLS :
You need knowledge of distinction in this. Moreover, try to identify aims of passage, difference of detail and main aims.
GUIDELINES :
1.Possibly find out differences between titles.
2. Lay attention on opening and closing paragraphs of the passage.
6. TABLE COMPLETION
In this type you are required to fill the gaps by collecting information or correct words from the given passages.
SKILLS :
Concentrate and locate information that is specific in the passage and table.
GUIDELINES :
Carefully read out rows and columns of the table.
2. Identify the type of word required to fill in the table. Scanning of passage is must as answers are located on specific part of the passage.
7. SHORT ANSWER QUESTIONS
These questions you need to solve regarding details in the passage.
SKILLS :
Targeting different words and information in the reading passage.
Understanding specific details or information of the text.
GUIDELINES :
Know about the words you need to fill in the answers (noun, verbs etc.).
2. Paraphrasing of vocabulary should be preferred.
3. Scan thoroughly the passage to locate information.
4. Follow instructions and keep in mind the limit of words.
