Academic Writing Task 1:-

The first chart below shows the number of airline crew (pilots, stewards etc.) needed to fly a passenger plane between Australia and a number of other countries. The second chart shows the number of passenger complaints per plane journey made on these routes, and average kilogram (kg) weight of luggage (or baggage) carried per passenger. Write a report summarising the information. Select and describe the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

IELTS Writing Task 2

Sample Answer:-

The charts give data about four flight destinations from Australia in terms of crew numbers, passenger complaints made and luggage weight per passenger.

The largest crew (15 people) is needed for the flight to Germany, followed by Indonesia (11) and Malaysia (8.) The destination requiring the least crew per plane is New Zealand (with 6 crew.) This trend is reflected in the weight of luggage per passenger, with Germany having the heaviest baggage at 38 kg, and Indonesia the second heaviest at 32 kg. Malaysia flights carry 30 kg per passenger, and New Zealand has the lightest figure at 15 kg.

However, the pattern for customer complaints is reversed, with New Zealand flights having the most complaints (6 per flight) followed by Indonesia and Malaysia with 3 each. Flights to Germany have the fewest complaints, with only 1 per flight.

Overall, it is apparent that flights to Germany require the most crew and baggage, while those to New Zealand require the least. However, passengers to Germany make the least complaints, while flights to New Zealand cause the most complaints. The Malaysia and Indonesia flights lie roughly between these two extremes.

General writing Task 1:-

You have just returned from holiday and were not satisfied with your trip. Write to the travel agency. In your letter

  • Say where /when you went on holiday
  • Explain why you are not satisfied with your holiday
  • Tell them what you would like them to do

Sample Answer:

Dear Manager,

I am writing to express our dissatisfaction with a holiday we have recently had that was organised by your company. We booked the 7 day ‘Explorer’ package and departed on the 22nd of last month.

Our main grievance is that we were informed by the staff member with whom we made the booking that all excursions were included in the cost, yet on our arrival we were informed that additional fees were required to join any of these trips. In addition, we had expected a far higher standard of accommodation, and were disappointed to find it was only a two star establishment despite your brochure stating that it would be at least three stars.

Given that we have had to make considerable additional expenses whilst on our holiday, we are requesting a complete refund of the fees we have been charged by your company.

Hoping for a swift response to our concerns.

Yours faithfully,

Lilian Garret

Prison is the only truly effective form of punishment because it separates criminals from society:” To what extent do you support this view?

There is no doubt that we need to find effective forms of punishment for criminals, and also find ways to protect citizens from the threat of crime. I personally feel that prison is only one of a range of options we should use, and is not always the most effective.

Firstly, I do not accept that all criminals need to be separated from society. Juvenile and minor offenders can be punished through fines, community service or other non-custodial means. This is cheaper than prison, and prevents the damage to the criminal’s family which in itself could generate further social problems. Furthermore, by keeping these small-scale criminals in society, we can try to rehabilitate them, for example through training or education programmes. This will help to reduce re- offending in future.

Besides this, if offenders are believed to be a threat to their fellow citizens, there are ways of containing them such as electronic tagging, curfews or regular reporting to the police. Such methods have been shown to be effective in reducing criminal behaviour and are themselves quite a strong punishment, as they restrict an offender’s freedom greatly. Finally, we should remember that prisons are to some extent ‘schools of crime’ and in many cases prisoners end their jail terms as more capable and determined criminals than when they entered.

Of course, it is true that in certain cases we need to both punish criminals and isolate them from other people. I recognise that violent or dangerous people need to be imprisoned – yet I believe this applies to a small minority of instances.

To conclude, I feel that prison is a last resort in cases where there is no alternative. This does not make it the only effective punishment, but rather the most severe among a variety of possibilities.

IELTS Speaking Full Interview:-

PART – 1 Intro Part

What is your Full name?
My name is Arshdeep Singh.

Can I see your ID?
Sure! Here it is.

Are you working or student?
I am a student as I have recently completed my senior secondary education with Non-Medical stream.

Let’s talk about Introductory Part

Do you often (like to) listen to music? Or Do you like listening to music?
So far I haven’t met anyone who dislikes listening to music. However, when the workload is too heavy that requires me to stay highly focused, music is a huge distraction. Unlike many people who like listening to instrumental music because it highly benefits their concentration and study, in my case the music makes me feel instantly sleepy.

When do you listen to music?
Well, music is essential to humans in the whole world so I’m no exception. I usually listen to cheerful music when I need motivation while sad music is my preference if I’m in a bad mood.

How much time do you spend listening to music every day?
As I’ve mentioned I prefer working in silence. To put it simply, no music is allowed during my working hours. After a long day at school, I probably want to chill out for like half an hour with music to help me stay energetic so I can get back to work later.

What kinds of music do you like to listen to? Or What’s your favorite kind of music?
My music taste varies widely from West to East and from the 90s to modern EDM. But if Korean pop is considered as a kind of music, then yeah, that’s my favorite of all time. More than half of my playlists are Korean songs and I always keep myself updated with the news related to Korean showbiz.

Have you ever been to a concert before? Or Have you ever been to a musical performance?
Once in a blue moon, I attend a concert, since the ticket price for foreign artists’ concerts is so out of my reach that I can only stay home and watch online. It was 2014 that I finally did go to a concert on my own, obviously, it was an international music concert. It was absolutely mind-blowing and unforgettable for me.

Do you like to listen to live music?
Unless it’s live at a coffee shop, where literally there are only you and music, then yeah I would love to. But I would change my mind if it’s a concert. The crowd is too crazy. It’s completely a mess that most of the time I end up having serious dizzy and headache.

When did you start listening to this type of music?
Since the day a friend of mine introduced her favorite group to me. She couldn’t help herself talking on and on about them that I thought I somehow needed to catch up with her. And the more I know about Korean pop, the more passionate I’ve become.

Where do you listen to it?
Almost everywhere, except for the classroom. It’s the golden era of mobile devices, everyone carries earphone and phones with them all the time, music, therefore, is on their fingertips.

Do you feel when you listen to this music?
Well, I’m a type of person whose mood is easily affected by what I’m listening to, thus as the music changes, my mood also fluctuates. But most of the time, listening to some music helps me pick up my energy and chill a bit.

PART – 2 Cue Card
Describe a country you have visited
You should say:

  • Where is this country
  • When did you visit it?
  • What were the interesting things about this country

BAND 8.0 SAMPLE ANSWER

I suppose I should begin by highlighting the point of where this country is. In actual fact, the countries that I have visited so far can be counted on the fingers of one hand. Among those, India is the one that truly amazed me by many factors. India has a very long history, the country is very big and has the second largest population in the world. I guess this is why there are so much to see. For me, one of the most interesting places in India is The Ganges River, which is well – known as the longest and holiest river in India. While most rivers around the world are for recreation or sports, the Ganges has many other functions. As the Indians believe, that the river is holy, people come here to pray and wash themselves in its water. In addition, the river also has thousands of people who wash their clothes by beating them on rocks. The other thing that often impresses tourist is the unique architect of Hindu temples all over India and visitors can enter at any time. The temples are usually immense and have antique statutes that are thousands of years old. Visitors are also welcome to eat and sleep in the temples at night if they have no place to go. After all, have to say that paying this beautiful country the second visit in future is one of the prioritized items on my bucket list.

PART – 3 Discussion

How easy is it to travel around your country?
It is really straightforward to travel anywhere you want to go, whether it is in the country or to visit other countries. There are airports in every major city, national rail lines and nation bus services. The flights are often good value and make it convenient for people to travel to other countries. There are good roads too, which means that you can easily travel in your own car to anywhere you want to go.

Which method of travel do you consider safest?
I think that I consider flying to be the most secure way to get around. When you take a flight, everything is so well organised by the airport, air traffic control and other departments, that you know you are in good hands. I prefer travelling this way above going on a train, a boat or in the car, as more
accidents happen on those types of transport.

What are the pros and cons of low- cost air travel?
The main benefit of low-priced air tickets is that people can afford to visit more places around the world. Other benefits may include, travelling more frequently and saving money. The drawbacks, however, are that these airlines often add on extra charges for baggage and food. The prices of food and drink on-board the aircraft is high, along with any other extras that were not included in the flight price. They
also have many cancellations and very uncomfortable seats.

How do you think people will travel in the future?
I think more people will opt to take a train to get to where they want to go. Some people enjoy a lengthy train ride as this gives them time to relax and unwind. I think they will make ‘super’ trains, with deluxe cabins and luxury facilities, encouraging travellers to want to travel by train on long journeys. Already in China, they have designed double-decker trains and Luxury fast trains, with an idea to transport more people in higher quality surroundings in the future.
