IELTS VOCABULARY

Chrome –  a hard, shiny metal that is an alloy of chromium and other metals.

Sentence –  Early on it was a chrome stool and burger joint.

Outbreak – a time when something suddenly begins, especially a disease or something else dangerous or unpleasant.

Sentence-  Fears are growing of a cholera outbreak following the appearance of a number of cases in the city.

ICU – intensive care unit: the part of a hospital the provides continuous treatment for patients who are seriously ill, very badly injured, or who have just had an operation.

Sentence –  Trials are also needed among subgroups of ICU patients to define biochemically and clinically optimal doses of specific vitamins and minerals.

Broomstick – a broom made of sticks.

Gunmetal – a grey corrosion-resistant form of bronze containing zinc.

Afterlife – the life, for example in heaven, that some  people  believe  begins after death.

Sentence- Christina believed she was released from the afterlife to pray for the souls in purgatory.

Bizarre – very strange and unusual.

Sentence-  It is a bizarre tale and the author hits just the right note of horror and disbelief.

Tungsten – a chemical element that is a hard metal used in making light bulbs and strong types of steel.

Sentence – These are simple combinations of metals like chromium, tungsten, iron or nickel, with carbon monoxide

Vulnerable – able to be easily physically, emotionally, or mentally hurt, influenced, or attacked.

Sentence – Babies are weak and vulnerable in the presence of huge shapes that they can only dimly perceive.
