Approximations, percentage and fractions
IELTS Task 1 – Pie Chart Vocabulary, In many of the IELTS writing task 1 questions, candidates have to deal with percentages. This is a good opportunity to express these percentages in a different way to boost scores. A way of varying this language is to express them as fractions or proportions.
For instance- use approximation: e.g. 49% can be expressed as “nearly a half”
Below are ranges of expression that can be used to express percentages.

80% four-fifths
32% almost a third
49% just under a half
77% approximately three quarter
77% just over three quarter
3% an insignificant minority
15% a small minority
70% a significant majority
71 % a large proportion
Example:
(i) the majority of participation prefers to use smart phones and laptops.
(ii) Nearly a third of participation prefers to use computers.
(iii) The proportion of those moved to join a family member were quite similar for immigration and emigration at 15% and 13 % respectively
Vary language of Task 1
As with any task 1, this is important conditions should not keep repeating the same structures. The language of writing pie charts is proportions and percentages.
Common phrases to see are “the proportion of “or “the percentage of”
However, candidates can also use other words and fractions. These are some exempts from the model answer.
- A large number of people
- Over a quarter of people
- A small minority
- A significant number of people
- Less than a fifth
