Academic Writing Task 1:-

The chart below shows the number of passengers arriving at a train station per hour across a day, and also the average price (in US Dollars) of their tickets. Write a report summarising the information. Select and describe the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

The table gives data about passenger volumes reaching a station every 2 hours in a day, and also the average ticket cost at those times.

Passenger numbers peak 3 times during the day. For example, the number at 6am is 480, rising to 690 by 8am before falling again. There is then a peak of 700 at midday, followed by an afternoon decline to a low of 230 at 4pm. A third spike is at 6pm, reaching 670 before tailing off.

The ticket prices partially follow this pattern. The 8am passenger surge is matched by a high price of $29, followed by a peak of $31 at midday and a decrease to $17 by 4pm. However, the 6pm spike in passenger numbers is accompanied by a low of $ 11 in prices, with a subsequent rise to $22 at 8pm and a final levelling off.

In summary, ticket prices increase broadly in line with passenger traffic, except during the evening rush hour when they actually fall.

l am writing with regards the voluntary position advertised recently in The Herald newspaper, looking for people able and willing to teach Overseas.

I have recently graduated from university, and I am looking for rewarding and fulfilling temporary work before l apply for positions related to my studies, and I think the vacancy you have would be ideal for me.

I feel that I would be able to contribute to the position as I have some teaching experience already and I am a native English speaker. I have also worked with various different levels and abilities of student so would have no difficulty adapting to the requirements of the job.

I would be very interested in putting my name forward, and would like some additional information regarding the role, specifically the exact dates and any additional costs that I may need to pay.

Some people believe that a gap year between school and university is a good idea, while others disagree strongly Consider both sides of this debate and present your own opinion.
You should give reasons for your answer, and include ideas and examples from your own knowledge and experience.

Sample Answer:-

While gap years are increasingly popular, they continue to be rather controversial because the benefits are hard to quantify exactly. There are arguments on both sides of this very topical debate, and I will discuss them now.

On the one hand, opponents of gap years point to the cost involved in areas such as air fares, accommodation and living expenses. All this money has to come from the student’s family, or even from borrowing to be paid later. Secondly, it is often said that gap years take a young person’s focus away from studying, and allows them to get involved in distractions such as travelling. This can make it hard to adjust to university life, damaging the student’s performance. Finally, there is a concern over the safety of young people if they are travelling to remote places. Being kidnapped or mugged is a poor start to an academic career, after all.

On the other hand, supporters of gap years say that the skills learned outweigh the disadvantages. They highlight the independence and assertiveness that a student will acquire, in areas such as time management and interpersonal skills. They also say that these skills lead to greater career success later in life, thus cancelling out the costs involved. Furthermore, there are many examples of young people using gap years to achieve something significant, whether in voluntary work or in a sector of business that interests them.

In conclusion, my own feeling is that a year off can indeed be a useful activity, with the experience leading to improved skills that are invaluable in the future. Of course, this is provided that the year is planned carefully and used for something genuinely worthwhile.

PART – 1 Intro Part

What is your full name?
My name is Hardeep Bhullar.

Can I see your ID?
Of course, here! It is.

What is your job?
I currently work as an office manager at a large marketing company. I’ve been in the job for about five years now. I’m usually assigned to work with a specific business in order to improve their sales through various marketing strategies.

Do you have to work with other people?
Oh yes, all the time. It’s a big office and we all have to work as a team if we want to achieve results. I have colleagues I need to liaise with such as the graphic designers and I also have administration staff who work under me. And of course I also have to work alongside the companies that we provide marketing for. So yes, I definitely have to work with other people.

Do you think you will change jobs in the future?
Well, that’s not something I’m thinking about at the moment as I really enjoy what I do and it’s a really good company to work for. The pay is good and they have other good benefits such as flexi-time and end of year bonuses. But that said, change is always a good thing, so l can’t see me being there forever. I am sure I will change one day.

Are you good at managing your time?
Actually l’d say I’m not too good! I don’t really have a system in place to organize things. I know some people have an electronic organizer or use some device to plan what they are doing but I don’t do that. But l always make sure I am on time for appointments and things like that, and I meet deadlines and get things done.

How do you manage your time?
As I said, I don’t have any specific system in place to manage my time. For example, if I am at work and I have a lot of cases, I just go through them each day and decide which I need to tackle first. At work we do have an online diary which I guess I use, so in that sense I do manage my time to an extent.

When is it most important for you to manage your time?
I think it is probably when you are at work. When out of work, it’s not really going to affect things too much, or at least only yourself, if you are late to meet friends or for an appointment, or if you are getting things done in your house. But at work, it will cause problems if you don’t manage your time effectively because you could miss deadlines or miss appointments. You could lose your job. So at work is when it is most important to manage your time.

Describe a language other than English that you would like to learn.

Learning a second language not only adds up your skills but also offers enormous benefits for your brain and personal growth. Additionally, being bilingual or multilingual expands your knowledge across the country’s border and provides you easy access to the understanding of other cultures. Therefore, beside English, Spanish sits high in my must-learn list due to its wide application and beautiful culture.

Needless to say, Spanish is one of the most spoken languages in the world and one of the six official languages used in United Nations conferences and statements. Spanish is spoken in most countries in South and Central America and in the US, over 50 million people are using Spanish either as their mother tongue or second language. As a result, knowing Spanish would absolutely widen your horizon, develop your sense of appreciation for Hispanic culture as well as transform your travel experience as who knows when you Would bump into some Spanish friends on your adventure. Many have said that Spanish is one of the easiest languages to learn thanks to its phonetic pronunciation and its similarity with English, in terms of vocabulary. However, it’s easier said than done. No matter how simple and intriguing that may sound, without full commitment and self-discipline, being able to speak Spanish would be a far-fetched idea. Therefore, in order to meet my goal and not to get demotivated along the way, I would have to find a learning partner and we would fight this tough war together.

What can people do to learn a second language?
People can do many things to learn a second language, like they can join formal language classes, learn through the online resources, travel to the country where the language is spoken, or watch movies in that language.

Is it popular to learn English in your country?
Yes, it is popular to learn English in India. In fact, it is the language of instruction in most of the schools in India. It is also the official language in India.

What are the difficulties to learning a new language?
There are some difficulties learners may face when learning a language. The grammar and other rules need to understood and learned. Vocabulary and pronunciation may also be difficult to learn. Some other challenges could be comparisons with one’s own language which cause an hindrance in learning the new language.

What is the best way to learn a new language?
I think there are many good and effective ways to learn a new language. I consider classroom learning the best because we can learn from an expert and also get some practice with our peers, which helps with learning a language faster.
