6 tips to take an 8+band score in IELTS speaking test
IELTS Speaking is a one to one interview with the examiner which goes for 12-15 minutes. This test is divided in three parts and the examiner checks your fluency, grammar, vocabulary and how good you are in lengthy conversation. This part of the test can be difficult for you if you lack in any on the above said factors. Beside this there are some other things that can decrease your score so we will discuss about them in 6 tips to take an 8+band score in IELTS speaking test.
Always use natural accent. Although the speaking test is all about is about your language abilities, you just need to sound like British or an American. The accent that you speak is NOT an assessed criteria for getting better score in the Speaking module. Examiners are bounded to check your pronunciation, tone variations, stress on certain words and many more. If they figure out your attempt at imitating a accent, you are more likely to lose score
Never Memorize Answers. Since in the part 1 of speaking test you have to speak about yourself, your likes or dislikes, it is more likely that you might prepare a speech beforehand. This can be not a good idea. You are assessed on your natural way of speaking according to the circumstances. Prepared answers are easily examined by the graders and are never going to impress them
Extend Your Answers. It not tells your English speech, if you are giving your answer with only yes/no, or merely in a sentence. However, you have to elaborate your answers, take care of not to go too far. Stick to at least minimum of 3 sentences for the questions that can be easily answered by a word. For others, you may explain by going off topic. Feel free to give clarity to your answers.
Majority of test takers feel hesitate to ask the examiner for repeating the question, if they don’t understand it. As a result, they sum up wrong answering, getting not good scores. You don’t have to….. It’s perfectly fine to ask for clarification if you don’t follow a word or question. Use phrases like, “I’m afraid that I couldn’t follow you, do you mind repeating the question please?” But do not adopt it as a habit, by regularly asking for clarifications you also depict your inability to follow the spoken English to Marker.
Do not make a vocabulary show. You cannot earn good marks by using long and complex words in your speaking. It will seem more artificial. Although, vocabulary is a factor that decides your score, be careful to use, be careful to use the words whose meaning and pronunciation you know very well and confident about.
Say “NO” to Silence. You may across a question you have no answer for. It doesn’t mean that you need to stay quiet and wait for another one. It puts bad impression. Always come up with an answer that someway connects with the question. There are no accurate answers here, only distinct ways of answering the question. It is only then the examiner gets an opportunity to elaborate how good your English is. Silence is not acceptable during IELTS speaking.
Restructure your Answer. Whenever a question is thrown to you, make sure you do not mimic the question in the answer. Find another unique way to put your answer forward. For Example: what is your favorite pastime? The answer could be something like this_ “I’d prefer reading a book or watching TV when I have spare time” instead of “My favorite pastime would be reading books or watching movies.
Here, Speaking will be no longer a nightmare, if you know what is expected of you. Now you keep practicing until you make it!!
