Most common question types in IELTS listening section 3 are table completion, MCQs (Multiple Choice Questions), matching headings, flow chart or diagram. However, the chances of form filling and sentence completion question type are very rare to appear in this section.
As there is variety of question types so it is necessary to learn some tips to approach the above said type of questions. The basic things that you should focus on while attempting Section 3 in IELTS Listening test is the same for all kinds of questions. Underline Keywords
In the 1 minute given to you to see the question it is mandatory to underlining the keywords. Underlining keywords in question is the most effective strategy for solving IELTS Listening Section 3. Let us see how to underline keywords:
Simple MCQ
Robin has been working in the workshop for
1. Three months
2. One month
3. Four months
In the above question, the main keywords that can gain your focus are “Robin”, “working” and “workshop”. So, you can highlight these keywords by underlining them. Now, when the audio starts, you should keep these highlighted keywords in your mind to get the gist of question and your eyes on the three options; “three”, “one” and “four” and just avoid the common word “month”.
So, by this method your options will reduce and you have to look at fewer things. In this way you will be able to locate the answer more easily. Similarly, you can use the same strategy for a bit difficult question as well:
Tips for IELTS Listening Section 3:
– Listen to the introduction of the speakers properly so that you can recognize different voices well.
– While understanding or looking on the keywords in the question, don’t just have a glance on them but you should understand the question because you will not get the same words or sentences in the audio as they will be paraphrased or replaced by some synonyms.
– Utilize the given first 1 minute to get an overview of the section as this will help you to get familiar with the questions.
– Be fast while listening to the audio, and take a quick review of all the questions as well as options to align up well with the audio and the chances of skipping a question should reduce to zero.
– Remember that information in the audio always flows in the same order as the order of question. So, you have to be continuously going on by immediately moving to the next question instead of looking back for any skipped question or unsurely marked answer.
