1. Listening Section
– Duration: Approximately 30 minutes.
– Structure: The Listening section consists of four recorded monologues and conversations.
– Content: Test-takers will listen to four recordings featuring native English speakers:
> A conversation between two individuals in a social context.
> A monologue set in an everyday social context.
> A conversation among up to four people in an educational or training context.
> A monologue on an academic subject.

– Question Types: These include multiple-choice, matching, plan/map/diagram labeling, form/note/table/flow-chart/summary completion, and sentence completion.
2. Reading Section
– Duration: 60 minutes.
– Structure: The Reading section comprises three long reading passages with tasks.
– Content: The passages are taken from books, journals, magazines, and newspapers, and are designed for a non-specialist audience. They range from descriptive and factual to discursive and analytical.
– Question Types: These include multiple-choice, identifying information (True/False/Not Given), identifying the writer’s views/claims (Yes/No/Not Given), matching information, matching headings, matching features, matching sentence endings, sentence completion, summary/note/table/flow-chart completion, and diagram label completion.

3. Writing Section
– Duration: 60 minutes.
– Structure: The Writing section includes two tasks.
– Task 1: Test-takers are presented with a graph, table, chart, or diagram and are asked to describe, summarize, or explain the information in their own words.
– Task 2: Test-takers are required to respond to a point of view, argument, or problem by writing an essay.

4. Speaking Section
– Duration: 11–14 minutes.
– Structure: The Speaking section is divided into three parts.
– Part 1: The examiner introduces themselves and asks the test-taker to introduce themselves and confirm their identity. The examiner then asks general questions on familiar topics such as home, family, work, studies, and interests.
– Part 2: The test-taker is given a task card with a topic and has one minute to prepare before speaking for up to two minutes. The examiner may then ask one or two questions on the same topic.
– Part 3: The examiner and test-taker discuss issues related to the topic in Part 2 in a more general and abstract way, exploring ideas and concepts.

Scoring System
Each section of the IELTS is scored on a band scale from 0 to 9, and the overall band score is calculated as the average of the four section scores.
The scores are reported in whole and half bands.

Recent Updates and Changes
As of February 22, 2025, all IELTS paper-based test candidates are required to use a black ballpoint pen for writing their answers. The use of pencils or pens of other colors is no longer permitted. This change aims to improve the clarity and legibility of candidates’ responses.
