Academic writing Task 1:-
This tables show data about the amount of television watched by children in different countries (hours per day) and also the average academic achievement of people in these countries (% of people completing each level.)
Write a report summarising the information. Select and describe the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Sample Answer:-
The chart gives facts about the daily TV use by children in various countries, plus the proportion finishing 3 levels of education.
Regarding hours per day watching TV the USA, Canada and the UK have the highest hours at 4. China and Italy are the next highest with 3, Brazil and India stand at 2 each, and Malta and the UAE have only 1 hour per day, which is a quarter of the maximum recorded.
Turning to academic achievement, we see that 100% of children completed school in Italy, Canada and Malta. The other countries are all in the 90’s, except India which is 80%. High school completion ranges from 100% in Malta to levels in the 90’s (Italy, Canada, UAE) and the 80’s (UK, USA and Brazil.) China and India have the lowest levels, with 68% and 60% respectively. For University completion, the UK has the highest level at 39%, followed by Canada (32%) and the USA (29%.) Italy, China and Brazil are all in the mid 20% range. The lowest figures here are for Malta and the UAE (18% and 19% respectively) and finally India with only 12%.
In summary, TV use and education levels vary widely. It is noticeable, though, that the countries with the highest hours of TV per day are also those with the highest % levels of University attainment.

General Writing Task 1:-
You have recently ordered an item from the internet, but are not happy with the purchase. Write to the company. In your letter
- Describe what you purchased
- Explain why you are not happy with the purchase
- Tell them what you would like them to do about the situation
Sample Answer:
Dear sir or madam,
I am writing to express my disappointment with a recent purchase I made from your online store, order number #73824.
l ordered a set of training DVDs that were advertised on your site as a package including 4 disks and an instruction manual. However, on their arrival I found that there were only three disks and no manual. In addition, there were scratches on one of the disks that suggest that it had been used before and returned to your store.
I have since found the same offer on another website and will be returning the package to your offices. I have read the refund policy on your site, and as I am dissatisfied with the product, I would like to request a return of all fees paid, as well as the post and packaging costs.
Should you have any questions, you can contact me on johnf@abc.com.
I look forward to a swift resolution to this matter.
Thanks,
John Fisher

Writing Task 2 (AC+GT):-
“We should introduce laws to make businesses and state services employ equal numbers of male and female workers in every department or area of the company”
How far do you support this idea? Give reasons for your answer, and support your essay with ideas and examples from your own experience.
Sample Answer:-
The issue of equality for men and women at work is still widely debated, despite the extensive legislation that now exists in many countries. Personally, I do not feel that imposing a numerical target for gender is a sensible idea, and I will explain why.
Firstly, we have to consider whether equal numbers of men and women really wish to do every job which is available. For example, few women wish to be airline pilots, and only a minority of school teachers are male. If we impose a law on airlines or schools, where will they find the people to fill these posts willingly? Furthermore, there is the huge issue of the existing workforce. Would it be right to dismiss a worker because he or she is of a certain gender, in order to create a statistically perfect balance? The effects would be disastrous for many hard-working people. Finally, I believe we should find ways to encourage equality of opportunity through support and guidance, rather than top-down legislation. For instance, improved child care facilities and subsidies would probably encourage more women into parts of the workforce which may currently be difficult to enter.
I do understand the opposing view, which is that legislation is the quickest and most effective way to achieve gender equality. Nevertheless, I feel that the disruptive effects of ‘overnight’ legislation would destabilise society and hinder many people’s prospects.
Overall, I believe that equality is an excellent goal for society to strive for. Above all, though, I think that this needs to be a gradual process, based on careful support rather than sudden legislation.

Where is your hometown? My home town is the city of Delhi, which is located in Northern India. The Yamuna River runs through Delhi, and you can also find the Yamuna flood plains and the Delhi ridge nearby.

My hometown is very important to me, because that’s where my family lives. It’s where I come from, so it shapes a lot of who lam as a person. If I move away, 17 likely be homesick for awhile.

Well. I’ve lived in my hometown since I was born, and I would be happy to continue living there. However, l’d like to try living abroad, even if it’s just for a short time.

My hometown, Delhi, is the second largest in India. The capital of the country, New Delhi, is also there. There is an international airport in Delhi, so it’s easy to travel in and out of the country from there.

It has developed much better public transportation, such as the metro, which has really improved the overall accessibility of the city. There have also been measures undertaken to reduce pollution and crowds, so those problems have slightly improved. Improvements are still being made to the education system, as well.
Is there any way your hometown could be made better?
I think one of the biggest issues in Delhi is women’s safety. The city does not have a good reputation surrounding this problem, and many women fear going out alone in the city because of it. More needs to be done to protect women in Delhi.

Well, there are many different kinds of jobs, since it is a major city, but I think some of the fastest growing job markets are in computer programming and software development. There are also many jobs in marketing and retail. Delhi is probably best known for its capital within the city New Delhi, and the president’s house, which is called the Rashtrapati Bhavan. It is also well-known to tourists for its food and marketplaces. Those who enjoy history can also check out Qutub minar, which is also an interesting sight.

Old Delhi is the historical part of the city, and it was founded about 400 years ago. Within Old Delhi, there is one particularly old place called “The Red Fort” that has been standing since 1648, and nearby to that is Chandni Chowk, which is often called the oldest bazaar in Delhi.

Band 9.0 Model Answer
Today I’m going to share with you a short vacation that left me a profound impression. It was a trip to the hometown of one of my classmates at university.
At the end of the second semester, our group at the university was invited to pay a 5-day visit to the house of one of the group members, which is located in X. We had 5 people in total and bought coach tickets to reach our destination.
On arriving at the countryside, which is quite secluded from the hustle and bustle of the city life, we were greatly impressed by the picturesque landscapes there. The atmosphere refreshing and the air was is unpolluted unlike in the city where many of us were living in. My friend acted as a tour guide as he was well accustomed to the local lifestyles and tourist attractions there. We took the motorbikes to tour the city land stopped at some street vendors to taste the local cuisine, which I personally found tasty and delicate. After doing the sights, we gathered in the evening for some small games and gossip about our study and our future career path.
All in all, such a short vacation still fills me with great delight each time I recall it. Hope that we could make another vacation someday before New Year.
