1. Understand the Task Requirements

Before writing, ensure you understand what the graph is showing:

– What is being measured?

2. Structure Your Report Effectively

A strong structure improves clarity. Use the following four-part format:

Introduction

– Paraphrase the task prompt using synonyms.

– Mention the type of graph, time period, and what is being measured.

Example: The line graph illustrates the changes in the number of tourists visiting three different countries from 2000 to 2020.

Overview (Summary of Trends)

– Identify 2–3 main trends without detailing specific numbers.

Avoid repeating basic words like “increase,” “decrease,” and “rise.” Use varied synonyms and precise expressions:

Use adverbs and adjectives to describe speed/intensity:

– Sharply, gradually, steadily, significantly, dramatically, slightly, marginally

Example: The number of users rose dramatically between 2010 and 2015, followed by a slight dip in 2016.

4. Use the Right Grammar

Correct grammar helps you express trends clearly.

– Use the past simple tense for completed time periods.

– Use present perfect for trends continuing to the present.

Example: Country A had the highest number of visitors, whereas Country C had the least.

5. Make Comparisons Where Possible

Rather than listing numbers, compare trends across the lines. This shows analytical skill.

You are summarizing data, not giving personal views.
