First thing to know for getting good score is the marking criteria by this you will know what exactly the examiner want in your writing and you can fulfill his requirement.

WRITING TASK 2 POSITIVE/NEGATIVE STRUCTURE

Here we are going to suggest a structure which can help you to score high band but the only thing is that you should practice this structure a lot.

– First thing is to read and understand the given question carefully and then take 5 minutes to plan your idea. In your planning decide on the clear positive and negative points and examples that you can use.

– This section demand you to write minimum 250 words and you should fulfill this requirement by writing your own ideas and explaining them or your score will be deducted.

– The essay is academic so it should be written in formal tone and no informal words should be used in it.

– The structure may differ according to the question as some question can simply ask you about the positive or negative aspect of a thing but others can ask further questions. Then the structure has to be adjusted accordingly by adding an extra paragraph to ensure that all the parts of the question have been answered.

IT IS A 4-PARAGRAPH STRUCTURE

PARAGRAPH 1 – THE INTRODUCTION

In the introduction paragraph simply paraphrase the question. Paraphrasing means to rewrite the given statement in your own words by using synonyms in such a way that it’s meaning does not change. It should be followed by the outline in which you should clear the examiner what exactly is going to come in the main paragraph.

So we can say that there are two sentences you need in the introduction

– Paraphrase the question

– Outline the specific topics that will be discussed in the main body paragraphs.

PARAGRAPH 2 – MAIN BODY PARAGRAPH 1

In this paragraph you should write the positive point or the main idea that support your view with a relevant example and supporting points for your main idea. Make sure you discuss only one point in each paragraph.

In the first sentence of the paragraph introduce the topic and in the next one explain it with supporting points and in the end give an example that justify your views. Some aspirants get confused in the example part as they don’t find any realistic example. You can take example from your own life or create one from your surroundings. Newspapers, Magazines, Journals, Study papers are also a good source of examples. You can take one from anywhere as examiner will not check facts and figures he will only judge your English writing skills.

The structure of the body paragraph will look like this-

– Introduce the topic (topic sentence – positive)

– Explain/give detail

– Example

PARAGRAPH 3 – MAIN BODY PARAGRAPH 2

In the body paragraph 2 write the negative views as per the demand of the question. The pattern will remain the same as body paragraph 1.

PARAGRAPH 4 – THE CONCLUSION

In the end write the conclusion in which you should give the summary of the main points and state your opinion about which side is better. You should not introduce new ideas or information in this paragraph.

– Summary of the main points

– Which side is better in your opinion?
