How to understand IELTS Task 2

In IELTS writing task 2 the minimum word limit is of 250 words and one have to fulfill this requirement to achieve the desired band scores. The test taker can easily pen down 250 words if he understand the question but in some rare cases the aspirant don’t understand the statement or a part of it and leave the task incomplete. For example- Many countries now face an economic downturn so it is better for each country to focus on its own problems rather than helping other countries. To what extent do you agree or disagree?  Use specific reasons and examples to support your position. In this statement let’s suppose the word one cannot understand is downturn. Without knowing the meaning of this word what will you do?

To resolve this issue today we will give you some tips to write the IELTS task 2 essay even if you don’t understand it properly under the heading “I cannot understand task 2 essay: What to do?”

TIP 1: Use what you do understand

Read the above question again. You will be able to know the main focus of the question which is that countries should focus on their own problems and that the question is asking to what extent does you agree or disagree. Now, you don’t know exactly what the question is saying could help, but you can make an educated guess and write about how countries should focus on their own problems. Keep in mind the question is asking ‘To what extent do you agree or disagree’, so don’t write a problem / solution type of essay – make sure you are agreeing or disagreeing to what you do understand. This leads us to Tip 2…

TIP 2: Explain what your understanding of the essay title is

In order to get the maximum score, you need to write on the topic. However, if you are doubtful about the complete topic because of some words you don’t understand, then use your introduction to ensure and clarify the examiner on what you are writing about, even if it is slightly off-topic. You will be penalized for not giving proper response to the question, but from that point in the examiner will grade your work based on what you have stated the question to be.

Here’s an example introduction you can write based on the question above:

‘There is an on-going economic issues across the globe and several countries are badly effected than others. Some argue that stabling one’s own economy should be prioritized instead of lending a helping hand to other countries, I disagree to this statement. In this essay, I will discuss how sharing of resources can change fortunes of a country and importance of adherence to world order, along with relevant examples to support my points.

By this when the examiner will read your introduction, he will realise that you have misunderstood a word in the question and penalize you accordingly, but from that point in they will read the essay based on your description, not the title.

TIP 3: Don’t waste time trying to ask anyone

Invigilators in the exam are not allowed to tell you anything neither they can allow you to ask anything from anyone. You don’t have the privilege to change the question so you have to write the same question and without asking anything from anyone. So, It’s better to right the answer of your own without wasting time in beating the bushes. Don’t get panic if you get trapped in such situation and should write following the tip 1 and 2.

With Best Wishes!

Thank You @~~
