a heavy cold – a bad/severe cold
Sentence- She won her match despite suffering from a heavy cold.

to Make a speedy recovery – to recover fast
Sentence- For the short term it sees patchy signs of improvement and no speedy recovery.

immediate action – emergency measures, first aid
Sentence- This tragic incident underlines the need for immediate action.

to perform surgery on – to operate
Sentence- Doctors sometime perform surgery on small PDAs to prevent the risk of bacterial endocarditis.

eye drops – liquid substance used for eye treatment
Sentence- Eye drops and nose sprays are among the most helpful treatments.

syringe – a device made of a hollow tube and a needle that is used to force fluids into or take fluids out of the body;
Sentence- Draw cold water up into the syringe through the needle, flush out the water and repeat.

a dose of medicine – a dose of a substance that is used in treating disease or relieving pain and that is usually in the form of a pill or a liquid;

ophtalmologist – a doctor who studies and treats problems and diseases of the eye;

dentist – a person whose job is to care for people’s teeth;
Sentence- He had an appointment to see the dentist but he chickened out at the last moment.

general practitioner – a doctor whose work is not limited to a special area: a person who is not a specialist;
Sentence- The district nurse is attached to the general practitioner surgery or health centre.

nurse – a person who is trained to care for sick or injured people and who usually works in a hospital or doctor’s office;
Sentence- She awoke when the nurse entered the room.

surgeon – a doctor who performs operations that involve cutting into someone’s body in order to repair or remove damaged or diseased parts : a doctor who performs surgery;
Sentence- I knew that I owed the surgeon my life.
