General Vocabulary
Pick something up- to lift something up and take it away.
Sentence- I know you have a hectic schedule, but could you pick something up for me on your way home?
To prey on- to hurt or deceive someone, especially who is weaker than you.
Sentence- Those exhibiting dark triad behaviour need to prey on the cooperative and unsuspecting.
Permanently- lasting forever or for a very long time.
Sentence- The explosion permanently deafened her in her right ear.
Polished- clean and shiny as a result of being rubbed, usually with a chemical substance.
Sentence- The dark polished wood shone like glass.
Reluctant-unwilling and hesitant to do something because you do not want to do it.
Sentence-Scientific institutions have been reluctant to take corrective action.
Remind of- to make somebody remember something that happened.
Sentence-Visitors to the city are respectfully reminded of the council’s powers to remove illegally parked vehicles
Reckon- to think or have an opinion about something.
Sentence- I reckon her backache was just a way of getting out of the housework.
Removable- easily removed; able to be removed.
Sentence-It has cushion covers that are easily removable for dry cleaning and the sofa comes complete with two matching scatter cushions.
Recount-to narrate; to tell someone about something that you experienced.
Sentence- Brenda goes on to recount what happened after she rebuffed the boy in question.
Roughly- approximately.
Sentence-The amount of food a child needs is roughly proportional to its size.
Run into difficulties- to experience or get into a difficult situation.
Sentence- Buckingham Palace has denied a report that senior royal officials said the marriage had run into difficulties.
Regret- to feel sorry, disappointed, or remorseful about something that has happened or been done.
Sentence-I didn’t regret the choice I had made.
Rival- competitor.
Sentence- The rival political parties are already jockeying for power.
To rest-to take a break or relax from some activity.
Sentence- After stopping to rest, they proceeded up the hill.
Review-to look over, study, or examine again.
Sentence- The reviewer padded out his review with a lengthy biography of the author.
Rebellious- opposing the ideas or rules of authority.
Sentence- Her rebellious attitude is just a reaction against her strict upbringing.
Resourcefulness- the ability to be good at finding quick and clever ways to overcome difficulties.
Sentence- Our dependence on overseas trade puts drive and resourcefulness in the export industries at a premium.
Reinforce-to strengthen; to make something stronger.
Sentence- Remember you want your visuals to reinforce your message, not detract from what you are saying.
Repetitive- doing the same thing over and over again, so that it becomes boring.
Sentence- My job is so repetitive, it does not require much conscious thought.
Refuge- a place that provides safety or protection.
Sentence- Crying is the refuge of plain women. Pretty women go shopping.
To read over- to read something carefully from beginning to end to look for mistakes or to check details.
Sentence- It makes me sick to read over such stereotypes devoid of content.
Respiratory disorder- an illness or problems affecting the respiratory system.
Sentence- Blows the wind instrument music therapy to be advantageous to bronchitis as well as other respiratory disorder recovery.
Realization-the process of achieving or fulfilling an aim, desire or ambition.
Sentence- He came to the realization that he would never make a good teacher.
Rivalry- the act of competing for the same thing in the same field.
Sentence- There’s such rivalry among/between my three sons.
Reluctance- the feeling of unwillingness to do something (not wanting to do something).
Sentence- The talks have foundered, largely because of the reluctance of some members of the government to do a deal with criminals.
