Family Vocabulary

Adoption – the act of legally taking a child to be taken care of as your own.

Sentence- The baby was put up for adoption.

Adoptive Father –  A man who has adopted a child, as opposed to a biological father.

Sentence-  My adoptive father is nicer to me than to his own son.

Adoptive Mother – A woman who has adopted a child, as opposed to a biological mother.

Sentence-  Please return after the adoptive mother, did not return subsequently.

Ancestor – a person related to you who lived a long time ago.

Sentence-  Man was evolved from an ancestor that was probably arboreal.

Aunt – the sister of someone’s father or mother, or the wife of someone’s uncle or aunt.

Sentence-  His aunt maintained him at the university.

Bachelor – a man who has never married.

Sentence-  His words refreshed my memory that he remained a bachelor at the age of thirty.

Birth Mother – the woman who gave birth to a child, although she may not now be the child’s legal mother.

Blood Relative – someone who is related to you by birth rather than through marriage or another relationship such as adoption  (= becoming the legal parent of a child who is not your own)

Sentence-  You should also have regular tests if you are over 30 and have a close blood relative with glaucoma .

Sentence-  The bride wore white with a pearl headdress.

Sentence-  The Brotherhood provided the moral climate in which more strident cultures could flourish.

Brotherly – showing the kindness, interest, or love that you would expect a brother to show.

Sentence- They showed no sign of brotherly love as they battled it out for the runner-up spot before the record crowd.

Care-Giver – someone who takes care of a person who is young, old, or sick.

Sentence-  The concurrence of the backup care-giver, should the chosen one not be available, is also vital.

Sentence –  She was betrothed to her cousin at an early age.

Daughter-In-Law – the woman who is married to your son.

Sentence –  She loved her daughter-in-law, and she lived in the palace with the couple.
