Factors that influence IELTS writing essay

If you want to score Band 7+, in IELTS Writing you should be well aware of the question types which can appear in the exam and the accurate approach to each of them. Besides, there are some other factors which influence your band scores. So in order to score band 7+ in IELTS Writing you should know Factors that influence IELTS writing essay.

Cohesion – It is the first Factor which refers to words and phrases that help link ideas together. For example:

1. Because of this ….

2. It is clear that …

3. It can be seen … etc.

Conciseness – Don’t think that long sentences will help you to score more marks. Lengthy sentences often cause damage and lead you to lose marks. Here are main three sentence structures you should use:

1. Simple sentence – Contains a subject and a verb and expresses a complete thought. For Example – The teacher returned the homework.

2. Complex sentences – Has an independent clause (simple sentence) joined by one or more dependent clauses (cannot stand alone as a sentence) For Example – The teacher returned the homework after she noticed the error.

3. Compound sentences – Two simple sentences joined by a coordinator (ex. for, and, or, yet, so). For Example – The teacher returned the homework so everyone got to go home early.

Coherence – It refers to how easily examiner can understand your essay? In order to improve this factor, you should have good knowledge of grammar. Coherence will make your ideas and views understandable to the examiner as they have time to read your content only once and if he don’t understand what you are trying to convey he will simply move forward.  

Composition – The structure of your essay (introduction paragraph, 2-3 body paragraphs, and a conclusion paragraph). Start with a good introduction which includes a little background on the topic, a thesis statement, and a preview of the 2-3 main points of your essay. In each body paragraph there should be a topic sentence illustrating your point, an example of your point and how it ties into your topic sentence, as well as a concluding sentence that ties this point into your thesis. Remember, an ideal paragraph consist of 2-3 sentences.

Conclusion also plays a vital role in enhancing your band scores. So you should paraphrase your two or three main ideas from body paragraphs. End your conclusion with a prediction or recommendation on the essay topic.

IELTS writing task 2 marking criteria

There is another factor that you should know to score good band scores and that is the marking criteria. You should be well aware of this so that you can write answer accordingly.

Identify the main topic of the essay

– Identify the main idea correctly if you fail to do so then you will not score much.

– If your main idea is not sufficiently developed and supported by examples then you will be penalized for it.

Identify all parts of the task

– Address all parts of the task if you imbalanced it than also you will have to suffer.

 – Even if you identify all parts of the task correctly but fail to cover each of them fully you will not achieve your desired scores.

 Present a position/opinion

– You should express a clear position or your opinion.

 Conclusion

– If you do not write a conclusion at the end your score will fall down to minimum.

– If your conclusion is unclear or repetitive then also the consequences will be harmful.
