Today we will talk about how to COMPOSE A THANK YOU LETTER IELTS GENERAL TASK 1. A thank you letter is a letter which is written to express your gratitude to someone for something. The motive of the letter is to say thank you to the person who have done something really helpful for you.

As already mentioned that there are number of letters that come in the exam and you have to identify its type as it will not be clearly mentioned in the statement. An example for thank you letter is “You and some friends ate a meal at a restaurant to celebrate a special occasion, and you were very pleased with the food and service. Write a letter to the restaurant manager.”

You can also adopt some tips of letter writing for getting good score.

DIFFERENT TYPE THANK YOU LETTERS APPEAR IN IELTS

Different types of thank you letters can appear in the exam as you may be asked to write a letter to a friend, a colleague, a family member, a business owner, a famous person, or someone else.

Well the content will vary from situation to situation and you have to mold your wordings accordingly. You may be asked to thank a teacher for helping you, thank a stranger for returning your lost wallet.

Although the topics you will face will be common but there are unlimited things which we encounter in our daily life so the letter can be about anything. To answer the question properly you need to read the question carefully and understand its demand.

 FORMAL VS INFORMAL THANK YOU LETTERS

It’s not only the type of letter you have to identify in the IELTS General writing task 1 but you have to also look that either the letter is formal or informal. Both formal and informal style have different rules so one have to be very careful for this. 

In a formal letter, you should start the letter by saying “Dear ___”, and refer the person by his title and surname. In the end of the letter you should write “Yours sincerely” and your full name. In the letter’s body the words used should be sophisticated, formal vocabulary and grammar should be accurate. No contractions, strong opinions, and any sort of slang should be used.

In an informal letters, you can start with “Hi ___” and person’s first name. You can end the letter with a very casual remark like, “Thanks again” or “With love.” There is no need to write your full name to finish the letter. The language in the body of the letter can be casual, and can contain contractions and slang.

HOW TO SAY “THANK YOU” IN FORMAL ENGLISH

In our daily life we normally express our gratitude toward anyone just by saying “thank you” or “thank you so much” to show greater degree of gratitude. But in writing we can go more formal and expand the things. While writing a letter we can elaborate it by telling the purpose of writing like in the beginning we can say “I am writing to express my gratitude for___” or “I wanted to show my appreciation for ___.” Either of these is quite good to use.
