Solving all the three comprehensions within 60 minutes is a major issue for many IELTS test takers as they struggle a lot to finish their test within an hour. To some, completing the reading is even like a dream now.

1. Try to read passage and solve questions simultaneously
In case, you find yourself running out of time, this technique helps you out in solving your most of the questions. This is the most pragmatic way of solving questions at your earliest possible. So when you first read the passage for an overview, try to analyze the locations of questions and solve them along side reading.
2. Read questions first
Commonly it is seen that students are told to read passage prior to reading questions. But, actually reading questions can assist you better in finding your problem’s solution. Most of the questions in reading are in sequence (set-wise) so when you are done with first question read second question and start reading the passage from the same sentence where you found the last answer. This technique will aid you to manage your time and you will never whinge for this issue. Instead, you will realize that you are left with enough time to re check your answers and to review tough ones.
3. Do transference of answers on fair sheet side by side
Admittedly, in listening module, you are given 10 minutes to transfer your answers; however it’s not the case in reading. Here you need to keep in mind that you are given no extra minutes to do that so you are only expected to write answers as soon as you find them. If students find it difficult to switch again and again between question booklet and answer sheet, they can do one more thing.
Firstly, student can simply find answers for passage 1 and write them immediately after completion of the passage. By this way you will not forget to transfer your answers timely and will even feel relaxed for next passage. You will be free from last minute rush of transferring answers which can make you write wrong answers in a hurry. Besides this, you can simply highlight the answers in the passages and then later can transfer.
4. Do the effective time division
Don’t forget that you have to solve 40 questions within 60 minutes. It is certain that one of the passages would be the toughest one and if you will start with that passage, you might end up losing 30 minutes on that only. So it’s better to stick yourself to a division of 17 minutes for each passage and use the remaining 9 minutes on solving questions which were left. If you are unable to do that in 17 minutes, restrict yourself to maximum 20 minutes and don’t exceed even by half a minute. You should give 20 minutes to last passage too as sometimes its easiest to solve.
5. Avoid excessive time on one question only
Make sure to complete a question within a minute. This strategy can really work for you as all of the questions here carry equal marks that are one mark for each answer. So there is no point of wasting more time on one question and wasting time of other questions carrying equal weightage. Moreover, some questions are really tricky and dicey so spending time on those is of no benefit. Rather just move on and focus on other questions. Solving rest of the questions will boost your confidence and save your time. Lastly, you can solve them too when you will have time or otherwise you can simply do guess work as there’s no negative marking for incorrect answers.
