Common mistakes in IELTS writing and how to avoid them

IELTS is a challenging test and it’s quite difficult to crack it and one has to work really hard to achieve a good band score. In today’s article we will discuss some common IELTS writing mistakes and how to avoid them

1. Accumulative small errors:

It’s ok to make few mistakes while attempting you IELTS writing exam as long as the examiner can understand what you are trying to say, you will not be punished in a big way but if you continue to make the same mistakes throughout, it will be difficult for you to score above 6.0.

These mistakes can be avoided by: If you are taking some classes to improve your writing module, these mistakes can be corrected in your classroom by your teacher. Also, she can help you with small spelling and grammatical. So it’s always advisable to take IELTS preparation lessons you will learn to avoid common errors.

2. Opinion based questions:

While attempting writing task 2, you are often required to compare two complimentary opinions. Usually, there are two perspectives and you need to discuss issues and solutions and the pros and cons of each argument. Make sure to explain yourself when you agree or you disagree with something.

3. Your essay does not answer the question

From a survey, we have found out that even though students have good vocab and even they will use Idioms to impress the examiner but still they will miss out on answering the question. If you will not answer the required question, you won’t be able to achieve a good score even if you use an advanced level of vocabulary and complex grammar.

How to avoid: in the given time you need to organize and structure your argument. Before starting it you need to well organized your essay structure before writing it. Make sure you analyze and understand the question well before you start writing about it as I said before our main purpose is to answer the question correctly.

4. Presenting an unclear position

In writing task 2 is If you present an unclear position in Writing Task 2, this can affect your final band score. Make sure you decide on a position and maintain it throughout your response. If you discuss what ‘some people think and what ‘other people think, you have not yet expressed your opinion. Make sure the examiner knows what you think.

Keep the following in mind when writing your essay:

– Firstly, decide on your opinion and then support your idea

– Use personal pronouns to express your opinion

– Once you have stated your opinion don’t change it in between during the essay.

6. Incorrect format

In Writing Task 2 we write our response in form of an essay. You must use paragraphs to break up your ideas. If you will follow these points, it will help your essay to structure in a way that it will be easy to understand.

Always make sure your answer includes the following:

– Introduction

– Body paragraphs

– Conclusion

Don’t use the following to structure your essay as it will decrease your score:

– Bullet points

– Headings

– Sub-headings

– Numbers
