Some people choose a career according to the social status and salary it will give them. Others choose a career according to whether they will enjoy the work.
Which do you think is the best way to choose a career? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
SAMPLE ANSWER
If I had to choose between a high salary and a high level of enjoyment when deciding on a career, I think I would have to choose the high salary. Earning money is the major reason why we work. If we choose a career only on the basis of enjoyment, we might not earn enough money. Once we have a comfortable level of earning, then we can use our free time to pursue our personal interests.
We work to support ourselves and our families. We need to pay for a place to live, food to eat, and clothes to wear. If we have children or other relatives who depend on us, we need to provide these things for them, too. Even just the basic necessities of life cost money, and the prices are always going up.
If we do not make earning an adequate salary a top priority, we might not be able to afford to buy the things we need. We might not be able to provide our dependents with adequate food, clothing, and shelter. We might enjoy our work, but if we and our relatives cannot eat, that does not really matter.
When we earn enough money to support ourselves and our families, then we can pursue our own interests in our free time. If we are not earning enough money, we spend a lot of time and energy worrying about it. When we do earn enough money, we feel secure. We can focus our energy on playing sports, playing music, painting pictures, or whatever activities we enjoy.
Earning an adequate salary means that we can provide the necessities of life for ourselves and our relatives. It gives us the security we need to enjoy the other things that interest us.
