Academic Writing Task 1:-
The graph below shows the weekday volume of passenger activity on the Toronto Metro system for July, 2007. Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Sample Answer:-
The graph illustrates the volume of passengers that travel on the metro in Toronto at different times of day on a typical weekday in July.
The volume of passengers during the week using Toronto Metro system varies significant according to the time of day. The system opens at 6a.m. and passenger volume average around 100,000 people using the system at that time. By 8 a.m., the system is at its maximum daily volume, averaging around 400,000 people. At around 6:30 p.m., the volume is again near this peak number, but does not quite reach the 400,000 point. Between these two times volume is at its lowest level at around 4 p.m. and the second-lowest level at around 10 a.m.. Between the hours of 12 p.m. and 3 p.m. passenger volume seems to even out at around 300,000 people. After 6:00 p.m., the volume of passengers drops steadily until slightly before 8 p.m., when volume picks up again. This trend continues until a little after 9, and then the volume drops by the 10 o’clock closing time to around 140,00 people.
This graph can be best explained by people’s work schedules. Most people begin work between 8 and 9 a.m. and finish between 5 an 7 p.m. This would mean commuting would be at its heaviest before 9 a.m. and 7 p.m., as reflected in the graph. The midday could be plateau could be explained by activity during lunch break.
General Writing Task 1:-
Your friend is thinking about learning to drive and would like some advice. Write a letter to your friend. In your letter
- Say why a driving licence is advantageous
- Recommend a driving school
- Give any extra guidance/tips
Sample Answer:-
Dear Monica,
I’m glad you’ve decided to learn to drive. You can’t begin to imagine how your life will change once you get your licence. Having a licence will give you the freedom to go where you want without depending on public transport or someone to drive you.
But first things first. You need to find a good driving school supportive and patient instructions. I thoroughly recommend the Ace Driving School in the town centre. All the instructions there are very processional and dedicated.
I think it would be a good idea to sign up for a course of 20 lessons to begin with so you can get a special discount. You might need a few more than 20 lessons, though to become proficient, especially now as you have to sit a computer-based exam.
Finally if you don’t pass your driving test first time, don’t worry. Few people do, so don’t give up! I hope my advice has been of use to you!

Schools concentrate far too much on traditional subjects which do not adequately prepare students for the realise demands of the modern working world. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Sample Answer:-
In my country, how much schools focus on traditional subjects varies widely. In recent years there has been a push to include more courses that would prepare students for the working world. Programmes that emphasis real-life skills such as construction studies or information technology are important to those students who will not go on to higher education. However, in my opinion, when schools put too much emphasis on less traditional skills, they are robbing students of a knowledge base that will no-doubt help them throughout their lives.
The purpose of primary and secondary education is to built well-rounded students and well-rounded citizens. Even though English literature classes may seem trivial to a 16-year old planning career in construction, the basic thinking skills he or she may again could be priceless in the future. Education should go further than simplypreparing students for the workforce or even for higher education. Children should not be forced to think about their careers at such a young age; instead they should focus learning basic skills.
A basic traditional curriculum should be present in all schools, but the choice should be there for students to branch out more into less traditional and more modern subjects. By offering a wide variety of subjects and incorporating information from our ever-changing world into traditional ways of teaching, students can graduate from schools with a well-balanced knowledge base that will help them to succeed in countless ways in the future.
As in all facets of life balance is the key to this issue. A balance needs to be sought between the traditional subjects on offer and those subjects that aim to prepare students for careers in a more practical manner.

Do you like your job?
Yes, I simply enjoy my work as it helps gain a lot of knowledge sitting in one place. It gives me a chance to interact with several people.
What do you think about handwriting?
It’s very important to have a good handwriting and present your written work neatly. I remember my English teacher always gave extra marks for a good handwriting. You may have written a great biography and if the reader cannot read, all your hard work and effort is gone. I fail to understand why the doctors were not asked to improve their handwriting as they prescribe medication to patients and their writing is illegible.
Do you think it is possible to know somebody by their handwriting?
Well, I don’t really think so, but – ‘Yes’ – the trained graphologist do reveal about a person’s personality, health issues, hidden talents and past life through examining the strokes, characteristics and traits of the handwriting.

I’m going to describe an edifice (= a large, imposing building, structure) which has won many awards for its unique and unconventional architectural shape. I visited once ‘Baha’i House of worship’ which is also called as ‘Lotus Temple’ in New Delhi. This is the one edifice which is admired for its unique architectural design in the world.
This flower-like structure is a temple.The Baha’i faith is a world religion and their chief objective is to unite people of all the races in our universal cause. On an average, nearly 8,000 to 10,000 people visit this temple every day.
The one word answer for this incredible architectural design is elegant. It’s shaped like a lotus glower. The House of Worship is a nine-sided circular shape. Like the lotus flower, it has 27 petals made of free-standing marble-clad. It has nine doors and they open on to a central hall slightly over 40-meter tall. The surface is made of white marble from PenteliMountain, Greece. This marble stone is the same which is has been used for several ancient monuments. Nine ponds and the gardens surround this majestic temple in 26 acre land.
Not only the lotus shape that earns the reputation of being unique for the Baha’i Worship Temple but also its glass clad on the top which looks like a ‘Kohinoor Gem’ from the aerial view makes this temple a class apart. Apart from its sublime (= exalted, magnificent) beauty of the architectural designing, its surrounding comprising trees and ponds sprawling in 26 acre land makes it a sure candidate for visiting for all.

Do buildings need to look the same?
I disagree to this perspective. People always gravitate to (= get attracted to) the distinctive architectural designs. I am not in isolation to support this point of view. Change is inevitable in our life. The same attributes applies to the architectural structure. It is the wish of people tgat pressures and inspires developers and architectural designers to come up with novel ideas of buildings designing.
Do you prefer traditional architecture or modern architecture?
Both traditional and modern architecture have their own finesse (= tactfulness, delicacy) and they give an insight into a country’s developments. I love beholding (= see) both types of constructions since they are a flattering silhouette (= outline, contours) of the past and present; to some extent, it also allows us to study the bridge between two cultures. It I’ve to lean toward my standpoint, I would slightly give more weightage to the vernacular of the old one, simply because it represents the positive side of the imperialism. I was not born then and that could be one of the reasons that I see them more fascinating.
Do you prefer tall or short buildings?
I always love to see the skyscrapers (= tall building of many storeys) and tall buildings. They are the embodiment (= representation, sign) of architectural advancement and modern engineering. In fact, tall buildings beautify the city’s outlook (= view, vista, panorama). At the same time, I also prefer low-rise buildings as they offer several benefits. Some of them are less congestion, easy-to-maintain, enough parking lot for occupants and visitors. And more importantly less amount of disputes and disagreements that takes place while taking any decision of maintaining the building because one has to deal with fewer occupants for a unanimous consent.
