SAMPLE ANSWER
Surprising as it might sound, in the near future, cancer will no longer be the biggest killer in the United States of America. Its place is going to be taken by obesity, an apparently benign condition – which many of us may not even recognize as an endemic malady. A bigger and more disturbing problem nowadays is obesity among children. Indeed, the significant increase in the number of overweight children indicates that the problem is not merely a medical issue. Rather, it has deep sociological roots. In this essay, I will first discuss the extent of the problem, then analyze its principal causes, and, finally, I will look into some possible remedies.
Whether you are in New York or Bengaluru, if you stand in front of the entrance of a high school when children are coming out, you might be surprised to see how many of them are overweight. And sadly, an obese child is unlikely to grow up into a healthy man or woman. It is highly probable that they will suffer from diabetes or hypertension, unless of course they are not suffering from diabetes already. In fact, surveys in several countries have identified an unusually high percentage of juvenile diabetics.
Moving on to the causes, obesity is evidently a life-style disorder. If children are healthy and had the normal fun and frolic of childhood -pre-puberty youngsters need no formal exercise regimen – there would be no obesity among the young. Obviously, the two greatest obsessions of our time – first, carbonated drinks and junk food and secondly, addiction to various screens, from the TV to tablets to smartphones, together create a colossal health hazard for our children.
If we go deeper into the causes, we see that the problem lies with the present-day reality of nuclear families where both parents work long hours, and the concomitant neglect of children. This leads to the frequent consumption of takeaway food and youngsters getting hooked to video games that demand only the use of the eyes and the finger muscles thus leading to disorders like corpulence.
Thus, the problem of obesity, which is both deep-rooted and widespread, has no easy solution. The preponderance of child obesity can be reversed only by consciously moving away from the life on the fast-track’ to a consciously chosen, slower lifestyle. A lifestyle where parents will have a lot of time to interact with their offspring, sit back around the dining table for a leisurely slow dinner, and spend weekends and holidays in healthy outdoor activities like swimming and trekking, is best advisable. It is ideal to develop the power of imagination of children by exposing them to good reading materials, like fables and science fiction.
Therefore, there are no easy solutions to the problem of obesity in children unless parents begin to think differently and try to change their way of life.
