People as individuals are powerless to save the environment Do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
SAMPLE ANSWER
I agree with the statement that as individuals we have little power to save the environment. However, this should not be viewed as an excuse for us to do nothing. As they say, every drop makes an ocean. Only when every individual comes together we can make the changes necessary to halt or reverse the damage that is being done to the environment.
For too long we have blamed the rising sea levels, massive pollution and climate change on everyone but ourselves. It is easy to blame earlier generations, huge corporations or foreign governments for what has happened or is happening around us, but even that is not as easy to do as imagined. The causes of the damage to the environment are spread among a large number of culprits, with each blaming the other and claiming that their own impact is limited. This also happens at a micro level with individuals.
The most important step to be taken is for each person to admit that they have some part in the destruction of the environment, to stop blaming everyone else, and to take the initiative to combat the damage. Once this happens, individuals can come together as massive powerful groups that can start changing the way the whole world treats the environment. The sooner we stop pointing the finger, the faster we can begin to save the environment.
Recycling your rubbish and switching to a bicycle might seem like small acts that have little impact, but when everyone makes an effort, it can have a real effect. We need to come together and realize that our individual actions are as powerful as our voting rights. We have to start refusing to buy products that are habitually wrapped in plastic, and we have to be willing to make the sacrifices in our lifestyles for the greater good. For instance, if we are expected to fly less or buy fewer clothes or eat farmed rather than wild fish, we need to be ready to take these steps to save our planet.
