IELTS WRITING TASK 2

IELTS WRITING TASK 2
Society is becoming obsessed with natural goods like fast cars, designer clothes and flashy jewellery. We have stopped caring about the important things and that is why divorce rates are so high and family bonds are not as strong anymore; our value system is disintegrating. To what extend do you agree or disagree? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
SAMPLE ANSWER
Nowadays, people everywhere seem to spend more time concerned with looking good and keeping up appearances than ever before; more and more emphasis is put on owing big cars, living in upmarket homes and wearing designer labels. And perhaps our attention to detail in such superficial aspects of life is leading us to neglect the more important things like building strong family bonds and good relationships, and looking after the ones we love. Our values seem to have been turned upside down as we now prioritise the superficial over the meaningful.
This could indeed be reflected in the worrying social trends we are seeing, such as higher divorce rates, increasing relationship problems and juvenile delinquency. After all, if parents are wrapped up in their own little superficial worlds, focus on keeping with the Joneses, the children and the relationships will suffer a consequence.
Society today seems to be obsessed with celebrity; and material wealth. Perhaps, it is very thing that we are seeking to attain – celebrity – that is causing to change our behaviour to the detriment of our personal and family lives. Celebrities lead very unreal lifestyles, and scandal, divorce and unethical behaviour follow them wherever they go, it seems. They are poor role models to seek to imitate.
It is clear that we need to start reassessing our priorities and return to the old value system of which family and friends came first. It is sad reflection on the country today that suicide rates are so high, and perhaps if more focus are put on attaining happiness rather than material goods and celebrity, we might start to see a return to the traditional values of the past, which emphasised the simpler aspects of life such as family and friendship.
