IELTS WRITING TASK 2
Some people say the fashion industry is bad for the environment, as it encourages consumers to buy new clothes all the time. Do you agree or disagree?
SAMPLE ANSWER
The fashion industry has long been criticized for its negative impact on the environment, particularly due to the promotion of fast fashion, which encourages consumers to buy new clothes frequently. I strongly agree that this practice is harmful to the planet for several reasons.
Firstly, fast fashion leads to excessive waste. Many consumers discard their clothes quickly, resulting in millions of tons of textile waste ending up in landfills each year. Since many garments are made from synthetic fabrics, they do not decompose easily, contributing to long-term environmental damage.
Secondly, the production of clothing consumes vast amounts of natural resources. For example, cotton farming requires significant water usage, and textile dyeing is responsible for severe water pollution. Additionally, the manufacturing and transportation of clothing contribute to greenhouse gas emissions, accelerating climate change.
However, some argue that the fashion industry is evolving towards sustainability. Many brands are now promoting eco-friendly fabrics, ethical production methods, and recycling initiatives. While these efforts are commendable, they remain a small fraction of the industry compared to the dominant fast-fashion model.
To reduce the industry’s negative effects, consumers must adopt more responsible shopping habits, such as buying fewer, higher-quality items and supporting sustainable brands. Governments can also play a role by implementing stricter regulations on waste management and pollution in the fashion sector.
In conclusion, the fashion industry significantly harms the environment by encouraging overconsumption and waste. While positive changes are emerging, a shift towards sustainable fashion is essential to minimize environmental damage.
