In some educational systems, children are required to study one or more foreign languages. In others, foreign language study is not a requirement. What are the potential benefits of foreign language study? Do you think foreign language study is an important part of education?
SAMPLE ANSWER
Foreign language study has many benefits. It improves children’s minds as well as their understanding of the world, and I believe it should be a requirement in all schools.
Foreign language study has enormous benefits for children’s intellectual development. Some people think that learning more than one language confuses children, but this is not true. Many studies have shown that children who speak two languages develop intellectual skills at an earlier age than other children. Researchers have also found that learning foreign languages helps children develop greater critical thinking skills, creativity, and flexibility of mind.
Foreign language study broadens children’s understanding of the world. Speaking a foreign language helps children understand other ways of thinking about the world. It also exposes them to the customs and cultures of other countries. When children study a foreign language at a young age, they learn to appreciate different ways of life rather than to fear them or be ignorant of them.
I strongly feel that all children should be required to study a foreign language. That way, they can receive the intellectual and cultural benefits from an early age. In addition, it is a well-known fact that it is easier for young children to learn a foreign language. Therefore, starting foreign language study earlier rather than later is more likely to result in a successful experience.
There are many advantages to foreign language study for children. In fact, I find it difficult to understand why it is not required in all schools everywhere. I definitely think it should be.
