WRITING TASK 2 (AC + GT)
The government is responsible for protecting a nation’s cultural identity. Thus some people think it is the duty of the government to ensure that new buildings are built in traditional styles. To what extent do you agree?
SAMPLE ANSWER
In a democracy, it is one of the prime responsibilities of government to promote the nation’s culture identity. In attempts to preserve the culture profile of a nation, government can decide to construct new buildings in traditional styles. However, this essay does not agree to the view that it is the sole responsibility of the government tom preserve the cultural heritage of the nation.
Apparently, construction of buildings in traditional architectural styles is one of the means to upholds and preserve a nation’s culture and heritage. Ethnic construction adds beauty to every town and city; their décor is far smoother to eyes than the sight of stereotyped skyscrapers. For example, the Pink city in Jaipur, India, has all the buildings, both private and public, painted in pink and construction uniformly.
However, spending huge amounts on construction buildings solely with a view to retain cultural identity cannot be justified in a democracy. This is because governments have to spend resources for education, health care, laws and orders and other infrastructural development. As such, it is always wise on the part of modern governments to entice people to follow traditional ways by assisting such construction in whatever ways possible. The society can also do a lot towards this cause. The modern affinity (attraction) of people towards traditional architecture in constructing buildings is indeed a welcome move.
Overall, although upholding the culture facets of a nation is most desirable, to contend that it is the sole duty of the government is shortsightedness. The public, as a whole, should show interest in it.
