Best IELTS Writing Task 2, 29th April
Academic Writing Task 1:-
The charts below show US spending patterns between 1966 and 1996. Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information below.
Model Answer:-
The pie charts show changes in American spending patterns between 1966 and 1996.
Food and cars made up the two biggest items of expenditure in both years. Together they comprised over half of household spending. Food accounted for 44% of spending in 1966, but this dropped by two thirds to 14% in 1996. However, the outlay on cars doubled, rising from 23% in 1966 to 45% in 1996.
Other areas changed significantly. Spending on eating out doubled, climbing from 7% to 14%. The proportion of salary spent on computers increased dramatically, up from 1% in 1996 to 10% in 1996. However, as computer expenditure rose, the percentage of outlay on books plunged from 6% to 1%.
Some areas remained relatively unchanged. Americans spent approximately the same amount of salary on petrol and furniture in both years.
In conclusion, increased amounts spent on cars, computers, and eating out were made up for by drops in expenditure on food and books.
General Writing Task 1:-
Last Wednesday you flew from London to Vancouver. When you arrived home, you discovered that you had left your hand luggage on the plane.
Write a letter to the airline. In your letter, you should explain:
- where and when you lost your bag
- what your bag looks like
- what its contents were
Sample Band 9 answer:-
Dear Sir or Madam,
I would like to report lost property. It seems that I left my hand luggage on one of your flights. Last Wednesday, November 22nd, I flew from London to Vancouver on LB118 and took my hand luggage with me. I put it in the overhead bin. Unfortunately, after the long flight, I must have forgotten it on the plane.
It’s a blue hand luggage on wheels. It has one outside pockets and is locked with a small lock. I had all of my school work and books in it. I also had a new jacket in it. I had just received it as a gift from my grandmother in London.
As you can imagine, these items are very important to me. Please let me know if you have my hand luggage and how I can get it back. Write to me at my return address or email: ana(at)feldman.ca
I’m looking forward to your reply.
Many thanks,
Ana Feldman
Writing Task 2 (AC+GT):-
Do the dangers derived from the use of chemicals in food production and preservation outweigh the advantages?
Sample Answer:-
Most foods that are purchased these days in small stores and supermarkets have chemicals in them as these are used to improve production and ensure the food lasts for longer.
However, there are concerns that these have harmful effects. In my opinion, the potential dangers from this are greater than the benefits we receive.
There are several reasons why chemicals are placed in food. Firstly, it is to improve the product to the eye, and this is achieved via the use of colourings which encourage people to purchase food that may otherwise not look tempting to eat. Another reason is to preserve the food. Much of the food we eat would not actually last that long if it were not for chemicals they contain, so again this is an advantage to the companies that sell food as their products have a longer shelf life.
From this evidence, it is clear to me that the main benefits are, therefore, to the companies and not to the customer. Although companies claim these food additives are safe and they have research to support this, the research is quite possibly biased as it comes from their own companies or people with connections to these companies. It is common to read reports these days in the press about possible links to various health issues such as cancer. Food additives have also been linked to problems such as hyperactivity in children.
To conclude, despite the fact that there are benefits to placing chemicals in food, I believe that these principally help the companies but could be a danger to the public. It is unlikely that this practice can be stopped, so food must be clearly labeled and it is my hope that organic products will become more readily available at reasonable prices to all.
IELTS Speaking Full Interview:-
PART – 1 Intro Part
What is your full name?
My name is Jaspinder Singh.
Can I see your ID?
Sure, Here it is.
Where is your hometown?
My hometown’s in Hanoi, which is the capital city of Vietnam. It’s located in the north of the country, not really that far from the southern Chinese border.
Is there much to do in your hometown?
Oh yes, there’s certainly lots to do there as it’s a fairly big city. If you like going out in the evening there are a lot of good restaurants and bars. If you prefer cultural activities there are museums and art galleries. But if you like nature there are lots of other things outside of the city which are easy to reach.
What are the people like in your hometown?
They are mostly quite friendly, but as with most big cities everyone is often busy so it may seem as if they are not interested in speaking or having a chat. But if you live there you know that most people are quite happy to have a chat if they have time and will help you if needed.
What are you studying at the moment?
I’m studying history at university. It’s a four year course, and I started it three years ago, so I have just one year left. I’m enjoying it a lot so it will be sad to finish.
What do you like most about your studies?
We learn about many things from the past such as politics and wars, but I like learning about how people lived in the past the most. It’s amazing to see how our lives have changed so much from the past up until now. In some ways our lives have got much easier now, but in other ways the simplicity of life in the past made people much happier. Learning about all that is fascinating.
What do you hope to do in the future when you have finished?
I’m not sure at the moment, but I may go into teaching. This is why I’m doing the IELTS, as I intend to carry on and do a Masters in a specific area of history. I’ll probably decide for sure what to do when I have completed that.
Can you swim?
Yes I can. I learnt at school when I was about 7 years old. Swimming lessons were compulsory at our school, like most schools I think.
Are there many places to swim near you?
Yes, there are a few public swimming pools. There is the main indoor one at a big sports complex in the center of town. There are also a couple of outdoor ones, but you can only use them in summer as it is too cold in winter. One is a big one in a park, the other is a much smaller one.
Do you think everyone should learn to swim?
Of course, I think it’s very important. Firstly, you spend much of your life on holiday by water, for example, when you go to the beach on holiday, so you won’t be able to enjoy yourself with your friends if you can’t swim. Also, for safety reasons it’s very important. You often hear about sad accidents involving young children so it’s very important.
PART – 2 Cue Card
Describe a time you missed an appointment for something
You should say:
- When and where it happened
- What the appointment was for
- What happened when you missed it
- And explain how you felt about missing the appointment
Band 8.5 Sample Answer:
I missed my first job interview two years ago because of my carelessness. Once I lost it, I feel regret for that late even today.
At that time, as a fresh graduate, an interview appointment is valuable. I applied for Unilever as Sale executive, one of the best global companies with dynamic working environment and good benefits. I waited for about two months after attending at the IQ written test. I received an email announcing that I was one the tenth applicants who successfully passed the test. I was overjoyed when they asked me to join at the formal interview. However, I lost that chance.
The appointment was at sharply 14:00 which I thought would be at 4pm. Thus, I planned to celebrate my friend’s birthday around 2pm and leave her house around 3 p.m. for the interview because the journey would take around 45 minutes.
I prepared for the interview carefully and left my friend’s house a little bit early as the city I live in has several serious problems of traffic jam. Unfortunately, it started to rain and the bus came late around 3.15 pm. The traffic was very bad so the bus was moving very slowly due to the unavoidable traffic jam under heavy rain. At that time, I received a call from the company. With an angry voice, the authority informed that I missed the appointment and lost the opportunity to work at Unilever.
Initially, I felt that my luck is not favoring me and felt a deep sense of anger because I thought it was not my fault but the traffic congestion. However, when I checked email again, I felt pity for me as I could not go to the appointment in time. It becomes my invaluable experience. Since then, I always read emails and note down carefully the schedule.
PART – 3 Discussion
How often do you make appointments?
I think it depends on what I have to do at the time. For example, when I was a first-year student, I didn’t have a part-time job, nor did I join any clubs at university, so I didn’t have to make many appointments. But 2 years later when I became a member of the Marketing Club, I had to make appointments every week for club meetings or my own department’s meetings.
Is it important to be punctual in your country?
Yes, of course, it is, but most of the time, people just don’t realize the importance of being punctual. When someone is late for an appointment, they’re hardly judged because it’s most likely that other people are late too. And gradually, one just forgets the importance of punctuality and starts to think that being late is normal until one has a taste of one’s own medicine.
Is it easy to make an appointment in your country?
Well, it depends on the type of people you’re making appointments with, and sometimes your social class as well. For example, if you’re an ordinary person and you need to schedule an appointment with a top business executive, the process is gonna be long and hard and the chances are that you won’t be able to meet him at all. Like you have to get through to his secretary first and that secretary will have to squeeze you in a time slot when the businessman has no schedule. But it’s a different case if you’re an important partner or major client of that company, and then of course the process will be much easier.
