IELTS Writing Task 2

In recent years, an increasing number of people have chosen to have children later in life. This trend is driven by several social and economic factors, and it has both positive and negative effects on families and society as a whole.

One of the main reasons for this change is the growing emphasis on education and career development. Many individuals, especially women, prefer to establish their professional lives and achieve financial stability before starting a family. Additionally, the rising cost of living and housing makes young couples feel unprepared to bear the financial responsibilities of raising children. Furthermore, improvements in healthcare and fertility treatments have made it possible for people to have children at an older age, reducing the pressure to start a family early.

The effects of this trend are mixed. On the positive side, children born to older parents often enjoy better financial security and more mature parenting. However, delayed parenthood can lead to smaller families and an ageing population, which may cause labour shortages and increased pressure on social welfare systems. On a personal level, older parents may face health risks and find it harder to keep up with the physical demands of childcare.

In conclusion, while having children later in life allows individuals to achieve stability and readiness, it also presents challenges for both family life and society. A balanced approach—combining career goals with family planning—can help minimize these issues.
