IELTS Writing Task 2

In recent years, some languages such as English, Spanish, and Mandarin have gained global popularity, while many minority languages are disappearing. This trend has both positive and negative sides, but overall, I believe it is a negative development.

On the positive side, the spread of widely spoken languages promotes international communication and understanding. When people around the world share a common language, it becomes easier to exchange ideas, conduct business, and cooperate in education and research. For instance, English has become the global language of technology and science, allowing professionals from different countries to collaborate effectively. This linguistic unity also encourages global travel and cultural exchange, helping people connect beyond borders.

However, the decline of local languages poses a serious cultural threat. Languages are deeply connected to traditions, history, and identity. When a language disappears, the unique stories, values, and knowledge of its speakers also vanish. For example, many indigenous languages contain words that describe natural phenomena and ancient practices that have no direct translation in other tongues. Moreover, language loss can make younger generations feel disconnected from their heritage and ancestors, leading to cultural uniformity and loss of diversity.

In conclusion, while the growing use of global languages helps communication in today’s interconnected world, the rapid decline of smaller languages is a worrying trend. Preserving linguistic diversity is essential to maintaining cultural richness and ensuring that humanity’s full range of knowledge and identity is not lost.
