IELTS WRITING TASK 2
Weddings are getting bigger and more expensive. What is the reason for this? Is it a negative or positive development?
SAMPLE ANSWER
In recent years, weddings have become grander and more expensive than ever before. This trend can be attributed to social, cultural, and economic factors, and in my opinion, it is largely a negative development.
One major reason for this rise in extravagant weddings is the influence of social media. Many couples feel pressured to showcase their special day online, which leads them to spend more on luxurious venues, designer outfits, and professional photography. Additionally, the wedding industry has become highly commercialised, encouraging people to associate a lavish ceremony with success and happiness. Families also tend to view weddings as a matter of prestige, investing heavily to maintain their social reputation.
However, this growing obsession with expensive weddings has several drawbacks. Firstly, it places unnecessary financial stress on families, especially those with limited means, who may even take loans to host an impressive event. Secondly, it shifts the focus of marriage from emotional commitment to material display, undermining the true essence of the occasion. Moreover, the wastage of food, decorations, and resources at such events contributes to environmental harm.
While supporters may argue that big weddings boost local businesses and create employment opportunities, the negative effects outweigh the benefits. Instead of valuing appearance and grandeur, society should promote simpler, more meaningful celebrations.
In conclusion, the trend of increasingly large and costly weddings is mainly driven by social pressure and commercialisation. It is, overall, a negative development that prioritises show over substance.
