IELTS WRITING TASK 2
Some species of animals are almost extinct; and many others seem to be fast approaching a similar risk. What are the reasons for this? What should be done to solve this problem?
SAMPLE ANSWER
In recent years, the number of animal species facing extinction has increased dramatically. While some species have already disappeared, many others are on the verge of extinction. This essay will discuss the major reasons behind this problem and suggest possible measures to tackle it.
One of the primary causes of animal extinction is habitat destruction due to human activities. Expanding cities, agricultural lands, and industrial projects have significantly reduced natural habitats, forcing animals to migrate or die out. For instance, deforestation in the Amazon rainforest has led to a sharp decline in species such as jaguars and macaws. Moreover, climate change is another major contributor. Rising temperatures, melting ice caps, and frequent droughts disrupt the ecosystems that animals depend on for survival. Additionally, illegal hunting and poaching for fur, horns, or meat have severely affected populations of tigers, elephants, and rhinos.
To address this issue, several effective steps can be taken. Firstly, governments should implement strict laws to protect endangered species and punish illegal hunting. Secondly, preserving natural habitats through the creation of wildlife sanctuaries and national parks can provide safe environments for animals to thrive. Furthermore, raising public awareness about the importance of biodiversity can encourage people to act responsibly. International cooperation is also crucial, as many species migrate across borders and require global protection efforts.
In conclusion, animal extinction is mainly caused by human-induced factors such as habitat loss, climate change, and poaching. However, with stronger laws, habitat preservation, and public participation, it is possible to safeguard endangered species and maintain ecological balance.
