IELTS Writing Task 2

In recent years, a significant debate has emerged regarding whether providing free public transport is the most effective method to mitigate

Traffic congestion. Proponents argue that this approach plays a crucial role in the reduction of the number of private vehicles, thereby alleviating

Traffic congestion. While I acknowledge these benefits, I only partly agree with this viewpoint, as I firmly believe that implementing other strategies—

Such as building modern infrastructure and encouraging the use of eco-friendly vehicles—is equally critical in tackling this issue.

One of the most compelling arguments in favour of free public transportation is its potential to reduce reliance on private vehicles. If people are offered a convenient, reliable, and cost-free alternative, many would be encouraged to leave their cars at home. This, in turn, decreases road congestion, reduces carbon emissions, and improves air quality.

However, relying solely on free transport may not fully resolve the problem. A crucial factor lies in the quality and coverage of the infrastructure. If buses, subways, and trams remain overcrowded, irregular, or inaccessible in remote areas, citizens will still prefer the comfort and flexibility of their private cars. Thus, governments should prioritise building modern

infrastructure, including wider roads, smart traffic management systems, and safe bicycle lanes, to ensure long-term efficiency.

In addition, the promotion of eco-friendly vehicles should complement public transport initiatives. The introduction of electric buses, hybrid cars, and government subsidies for electric vehicle ownership can significantly reduce environmental damage while still catering to the population’s demand for private mobility. For example, countries such as Norway have successfully encouraged a shift toward electric vehicles through tax incentives and charging infrastructure, leading to a sharp decrease in pollution levels.

In conclusion, while providing free public transportation has the potential to reduce traffic congestion and promote environmental benefits, it is not a comprehensive solution. A combination of strategies—investing in modern infrastructure and fostering the use of eco-friendly vehicles—will be more effective in addressing the growing challenges of urban mobility.
