IELTS Writing Task 2

Tourism is a major source of income for many developing countries. However, its benefits often fail to reach the poorest communities. To address this, governments and tourism operators must ensure that a greater share of revenue is directed towards local people.

One effective measure is to promote community-based tourism. This involves employing local residents as guides, hosts, and service providers, enabling them to earn directly from visitors. Additionally, encouraging tourists to buy handicrafts, food, and services from small, locally owned businesses can significantly boost village economies. Governments can also introduce tax incentives for hotels and tour companies that source supplies locally and hire from within the community.

To prevent tourism from damaging traditional cultures, cultural preservation programmes should be integrated into tourism development. This could include supporting local festivals, safeguarding heritage sites, and offering cultural education to visitors. Furthermore, tourism policies should limit over-commercialisation, ensuring that cultural performances and crafts remain authentic rather than being altered solely for tourist appeal.

In conclusion, tourism can become a powerful tool for poverty reduction if managed inclusively. By directing income towards the poorest and protecting cultural heritage, countries can create a sustainable tourism model that benefits both visitors and local communities without eroding their traditions.
