IELTS WRITING TASK 2
In some cities, public parks and open spaces are changed into gardens where local residents can grow their own fruit and vegetables. Do you think the benefits outweigh the disadvantages?
SAMPLE ANSWER
In recent years, many cities have transformed public parks and open spaces into community gardens where local residents can cultivate fruits and vegetables. While this trend offers several advantages, it also presents some drawbacks. In my opinion, the benefits significantly outweigh the disadvantages.
One major benefit of converting public parks into gardens is the promotion of healthier lifestyles. By growing their own produce, people have access to fresh, organic fruits and vegetables, which encourages better eating habits. Additionally, gardening is a form of physical exercise that helps improve overall well-being. Such spaces also foster community spirit, as residents work together, share knowledge, and build stronger social bonds.
Moreover, community gardens contribute positively to the environment. They increase green cover, improve air quality, and provide habitats for pollinators like bees. These gardens can also reduce the carbon footprint related to transporting food from distant farms, making urban living more sustainable.
However, there are some disadvantages to consider. Converting parks into gardens may reduce open recreational spaces where people can relax or engage in sports. This could limit opportunities for physical activities such as jogging or playing games. Furthermore, maintenance of these gardens requires time and effort, and if not properly managed, they can become untidy or neglected.
Despite these concerns, the overall advantages of community gardens in promoting health, environmental sustainability, and community engagement make them a valuable use of urban spaces. Therefore, I strongly believe that the benefits outweigh the drawbacks.
