Long school holidays provide several advantages. Firstly, they offer both students and teachers a much-needed break from the academic routine, helping to reduce burnout and improve mental well-being. Additionally, these breaks allow families to spend quality time together, travel, or participate in enrichment activities such as summer camps, which contribute to personal growth beyond the classroom.
However, there are strong arguments in favour of shorter school holidays. Extended time away from school can lead to a “learning gap,” where students forget a portion of what they’ve learned, requiring review at the start of the next term. Moreover, for working parents, managing childcare during such long periods can be financially and logistically challenging. Shorter, more frequent holidays could help maintain academic momentum while still providing regular rest.
In conclusion, while long holidays support relaxation and family bonding, they may also disrupt learning and place strain on families.
