IELTS Writing Task 2

In recent years, the idea of a shorter working week and a longer weekend has gained popularity. I strongly agree with this proposal, as it can lead to improved employee well-being, higher productivity, and better work-life balance.

First and foremost, a reduced working week allows employees to rest and recover more effectively. Many people experience stress and burnout due to long work hours, which negatively impacts their mental and physical health. A longer weekend gives them the time to relax, spend quality moments with family, or pursue hobbies—leading to increased happiness and job satisfaction.

Moreover, several studies suggest that working fewer hours can actually improve productivity. When employees are well-rested, they tend to be more focused and efficient during working hours. Countries that have experimented with a four-day work week, such as Iceland and Japan, have reported positive results including increased motivation and performance.

Lastly, a longer weekend can benefit society as a whole. More free time encourages individuals to engage in community activities, travel, or spend money in the leisure and service industries, boosting the economy.

However, it is important to ensure that such a change does not result in pay cuts or pressure to complete the same workload in fewer days. A well-planned transition is crucial.

In conclusion, I believe that shortening the working week is a progressive step toward healthier, more productive societies. It is a realistic and beneficial change that should be seriously considered by employers and governments alike.
