IELTS WRITING TASK 2
Some people think that the detailed criminal description on newspaper and TV has bad influences, so this kind of information should be restricted on the media. To what extend do you agree or disagree?
SAMPLE ANSWER
Some individuals argue that detailed reports of criminal activity in newspapers and on television can have harmful effects and should therefore be restricted in the media. I partly agree with this view, as both the potential harm and the public’s right to information must be considered.
On one hand, excessive exposure to crime-related content, especially when graphic details are shared, can lead to fear, anxiety, and desensitization among viewers. Children and vulnerable individuals may become frightened or develop a distorted view of society. Moreover, detailed coverage may unintentionally glorify criminals or inspire copycat behavior, particularly among impressionable youth. For these reasons, some level of restriction may be justified.
However, media also plays a vital role in informing the public. Transparency in criminal reporting ensures accountability and can help people remain aware of threats in their communities. It may also contribute to public pressure on authorities to act on crime prevention. Completely restricting such content could lead to censorship and reduce freedom of the press.
A balanced approach would be to allow crime reporting but with ethical guidelines—avoiding sensationalism and omitting unnecessarily graphic or distressing details. This ensures the public stays informed without being negatively influenced.
In conclusion, while unrestricted crime reporting can have adverse effects, completely censoring such information is not the solution. Responsible journalism that respects both public interest and social well-being is a more appropriate path.
