IELTS Writing Task 2

Success in life is often attributed to either luck or ability. While some people believe that success depends more on luck, I strongly disagree and argue that ability and hard work play a more significant role.

Firstly, many successful individuals have reached their goals through perseverance and dedication. For instance, athletes, scientists, and entrepreneurs often spend years honing their skills and gaining experience. Their achievements are the result of consistent effort rather than random luck. Take the example of Elon Musk, whose success stems from innovation, risk-taking, and strategic planning.

Secondly, relying on luck alone is unrealistic. Luck may offer a temporary opportunity, but without the necessary skills or knowledge, one is unlikely to sustain success. Even if a person wins a lottery or gets an unexpected promotion, long-term success still demands competence, discipline, and adaptability.

However, it is fair to acknowledge that luck can sometimes influence circumstances, such as being born into a wealthy family or meeting the right mentor at the right time. Yet, these advantages are meaningless without the ability to make the most of them.

In conclusion, while luck may occasionally contribute to someone’s success, it is ability—combined with hard work and persistence—that truly determines long-term achievement. Therefore, I believe that success is primarily the result of one’s efforts rather than mere chance.
