IELTS Writing Task 2

In recent years, the widespread availability of copyrighted music and books on the internet—often for free or at a minimal cost—has significantly impacted musicians and authors. While this development offers greater accessibility for consumers, it has also raised concerns about the sustainability of creative professions.

One major consequence is the financial loss suffered by artists and writers. Traditionally, musicians and authors relied on the sale of their albums and books for income. However, with the rise of illegal downloads and free streaming platforms, their revenue has diminished. As a result, many talented individuals struggle to earn a living, discouraging creativity and reducing the diversity of content available to the public.

On the other hand, this trend has also democratized access to content. People from low-income backgrounds now have the opportunity to enjoy music and literature without financial barriers. Furthermore, digital platforms can help lesser-known artists gain global exposure, building a fanbase without the need for traditional publishing houses or record labels.

Overall, while there are some positive aspects, the negative consequences outweigh the benefits. The ease of access to copyrighted materials has made it difficult for artists to protect their intellectual property and receive fair compensation. If this trend continues unchecked, it could lead to a decline in the quality and quantity of creative output in the long term.

In conclusion, although digital distribution has increased accessibility, its impact on musicians and authors has been largely negative due to lost income and reduced motivation to create.
