IELTS WRITING TASK 2

IELTS WRITING TASK 2
In the future it may be necessary for us to live on other planets. For this reason, some people believe that we should spend money now to research other planets, such as Mars. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
SAMPLE ANSWER
The idea that humanity may one day need to inhabit other planets, such as Mars, has led some to argue for immediate investment in space exploration. I strongly agree that funding research into other planets is both necessary and wise.
Firstly, Earth’s resources are finite. With the rapid growth of the global population and unsustainable consumption patterns, natural resources such as water, fossil fuels, and arable land are under immense pressure. Investing in space research now may provide future generations with viable alternatives when Earth becomes less habitable.
Secondly, scientific exploration often leads to innovations that benefit humanity in the present. For example, technologies developed for space missions have already improved communication systems, weather forecasting, and even medical devices. By funding research into planetary exploration, we not only prepare for the future but also foster technological advancement that can solve current global issues.
Moreover, preparing to live on another planet may offer an insurance policy against catastrophic events, such as nuclear war, pandemics, or asteroid impacts. Colonising Mars or another celestial body could ensure the survival of the human race in the long term.
Opponents argue that we should focus on solving Earth’s problems first. While this is valid, it need not be an either-or scenario. Investment in planetary research can run parallel to addressing environmental and social issues on Earth.
In conclusion, the potential benefits of researching other planets far outweigh the costs. It is both a prudent and visionary step towards ensuring the long-term survival and progress of humanity.
