IELTS Writing Task 2

Earth’s natural resources are running out and, with a population exceeding seven billion and climbing, there is no doubt that they will soon be entirely depleted. Scientists predict that unless more resources are found soon, the human race will face some insurmountable challenges. However, I believe that looking to space for a solution is the wrong thing to do.

Take fossil fuels as an example of a diminishing resource. Without them, we would not be able to power our industries, heat or cool our homes or drive our cars. Some scientists believe that we would be able to find suitable replacements in space. They suggest that we could mine asteroids for these resources, as they are thought to contain rich sources of fossil fuels similar to oil and coal. Others think that we might find similar resources on some of Earth’s nearest planets, like Mars and Venus.

Although at first glance this seems like a reasonable solution, there are three compelling counter-arguments. First of all, space travel is extremely expensive, and it is doubtful the amounts invested in such ventures would pay off. Secondly, there is the economic impact it would have on countries which rely on fossil fuel exports as their main source of income. It is true that eventually they would need to seek out alternative ways of bolstering their economy, but the short-term impact would be devastating. Furthermore, there is the environmental argument. Do we really want to continue polluting our planet with fossil fuels?

What alternatives there might be is an interesting question. “Green” power (wind farms, solar power, etc.) already exists, but is generally under-utilised. One problem is that while fossil fuels are still easily available, many countries are unwilling to invest in alternative energy technologies. In most cases, this is due to economic concerns, as initial costs can be prohibitive. Perhaps what we need to do is give these countries loans or grants to develop these alternatives. At the same time, countries that rely on exporting fossil fuels for their main source of income should be helped to develop other industries. That way, their economies will not be adversely affected when their fossil fuel supplies eventually run out.

In conclusion, while we need to take drastic action to replenish or replace our natural resources, looking to space for answers is not the answer. The economic cost is just too great. Therefore, we need to make the most of what we have on Earth, even if that means spending a lot of money on developing or improving our existing alternatives. In the long run, it will be worth it.
