Some people think society could benefit more if more people study business than history. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

In today’s fast-paced and competitive world, some argue that society would benefit more if a greater number of individuals studied business rather than history. While I acknowledge the importance of business education in driving economic growth and innovation, I believe history plays an equally vital role in shaping a balanced and informed society.
Business studies equip individuals with practical skills such as entrepreneurship, financial literacy, and strategic thinking, all of which contribute directly to job creation and economic development. In an era where globalization and market competition dominate, having a workforce well-versed in business principles can undoubtedly improve national prosperity and adaptability.
However, history offers invaluable lessons from the past that help prevent the repetition of mistakes. It fosters critical thinking, cultural awareness, and ethical understanding—qualities essential for responsible citizenship. A society that values only economic progress, while ignoring its historical context, risks becoming morally and culturally detached. Moreover, history nurtures a sense of identity and belonging, which is crucial for social cohesion.
Rather than viewing business and history as mutually exclusive, it is more beneficial to recognize their complementary roles. A society driven by business innovation, yet guided by historical insight, is more likely to progress sustainably and ethically.
In conclusion, while business studies are undeniably important for economic development, history provides the moral and cultural foundation of a society.
