IELTS Writing Task 2

The fashion industry, particularly the rise of fast fashion, has come under scrutiny for its environmental impact. I strongly agree that this industry contributes significantly to environmental degradation, primarily by promoting overconsumption and generating excessive waste.

Firstly, the fashion industry encourages a culture of constant purchasing. With new trends emerging every few weeks, consumers feel pressured to buy the latest styles to stay fashionable. This results in the mass production of clothing, which demands large amounts of water, energy, and raw materials. For example, producing a single cotton shirt can use up to 2,700 liters of water, which contributes to water scarcity in some regions.

Secondly, the fast fashion model leads to enormous textile waste. As people buy more, they also discard clothes more frequently. Most of these items end up in landfills or are incinerated, releasing harmful chemicals and greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Moreover, many synthetic fabrics used in fast fashion are non-biodegradable and shed microplastics that pollute oceans and harm marine life.

While the fashion industry does provide jobs and supports economies, these benefits do not outweigh the long-term environmental costs. Sustainable practices, such as recycling fabrics and promoting slow fashion, are necessary steps forward.

In conclusion, the fashion industry’s encouragement of relentless consumerism has serious consequences for the environment. Unless the industry and consumers shift toward more sustainable habits, environmental damage will only worsen.
