IELTS Writing Task 2

In the modern world, the Internet has become a fundamental part of daily life, providing access to education, employment opportunities, healthcare information, and public services. However, in some countries, large segments of the population are unable to afford Internet access. This raises the question of whether governments should take responsibility for ensuring universal access. I firmly believe they should.

First and foremost, the Internet is no longer a luxury but a necessity. During the COVID-19 pandemic, for instance, education systems around the world shifted online. Students without Internet access were left behind, widening the educational gap between rich and poor. Government intervention in providing affordable or free access can help bridge this digital divide and promote equal opportunities for all citizens.

Secondly, the Internet plays a critical role in economic development. Access to online resources enables individuals to gain skills, apply for jobs, and even start businesses. By subsidizing Internet infrastructure or offering low-cost public access points, governments can empower citizens to improve their economic situations, which in turn contributes to national growth.

Critics may argue that limited public funds should prioritize basic needs like food and housing. However, investing in digital infrastructure can have long-term benefits, including better access to essential services and increased social inclusion.

In conclusion, ensuring universal Internet access is a government responsibility in today’s interconnected world. It promotes equality, supports economic progress, and is vital for an informed and empowered society.
